For Mr. X, I would just rapidly use the low kick. As long as I didn't have a lot of damage already, it always worked for me.

Yeah, it works really well for the first and second times you beat him, but by the third time it becomes more risky. At the third/fourth encounter I usually try to nail him with two jump kick well placed.
You are all right, I did have success with low kicks, as well as occasionally with the jump kick. I suppose I didn't want to rely too much on the low kicking strat and tried to get better at jump kicks, with sporadic success.
