I'm sure enough of you probably are aware that digitalpress keeps a pretty hefty archive of NES manuals scanned in PDF format to grab.  They have like 350 of them, and we know the NES had more games than that.  I so far have not found a better archive with more of them, vimms is nice but they tattoo all of them with their sites name and stuff (lame.)

Would it be worth the effort to see what they're missing and if we have one scan and submit it?  How about special maps like the Faria one you can't find anywhere?

I'm just throwing it out there as I think this would be a good endeavor and also it would be a good preservation project too.

I'm pretty sure they are all here on Nintendoage. Or do you mean specifically in PDF format?

What I'm speaking of is not just the front/back art but the entire thing cover to cover scanned into PDF format. Is that how it is here, if so never mind.

Well, they are JPEG images of everything front to back.  I'm sure someone with a bit of knowledge could write a script to convert them all to PDF format.

Why would you want to open them using *insert adobe product here*?

I can't believe anyone would prefer a billion jpegs over a pdf, or any other single file format. The manuals here at NA are ok if you want to a single read-through, but they are near useless for a personal reference.

The archive at digitpress is pretty good. For the NES, anyway. The SNES section is anemic. Another decent source is replacementdocs, however even they do not seem to have everything.

As for "adobe product", you do not need an adobe product to open PDFs. At the very least, someone with almost zero computer knowledge could be running Foxit. On my PC I had a stand-alone viewer, I believe it was called "Sumatra PDF". I switched to a Mac as my main computer in 2006 and it has native PDF viewing, so there is no need for any third party software.

You guys may laugh I prefer text manuals with no pics. Easier to read which avoids confusion.

Sorry,  but what in the world is the difference between "personal reference" and reading them?

I suppose the advantage of pdf over jpg in this case is there would only need to be one file per manual if you wanted to download them.

I don't care to download them, however, so I am quite indifferent!

Personally I do too, but there's far more in picture format.  Back when I was in college I while working with martin on nesworld and some other stuff had many boring weekends at times and typed up NES manuals in text format.  My most cracked out one was a 12 hour run and i wrote up the full 80 page Final Fantasy manual/travelers guide, oh and I did Faxanadu too doing a neat ascii 'world tree' image from the book.

I wasn't trying to start some debate over jpg vs PDF, but I'd take the PDF anytime unless the JPG was cleaner.  The thing is Office2010 has a default PDF maker in it.  You throw all your pictures 1 per page into Word, and save as PDF and it makes them all single page shots per page.  I did this with that harder to find old NIntendo Power Legend of Zelda Link to the Past comic book I've held onto and jammed it on my Kindle for fun on the go that way.

In short...Word 2010 can make PDFs.

You would just make the .JPG's all on top of each other in a single file. Or put them all in a folder. 100x better than *insert adobe format here*.

To each their own, JPGs kinda suck as they are notorious for loss of quality with colorization and clarity, at least from a photographers stand point which is why they avoid the format. The PDF will take whatever format and save it stock, and for me I prefer all the pics in one file I can flip like a book.

PNG, Same thing. But they're already in JPG form so unless we want to archive them all again, it's probably going to stay JPG.

And PDF's aren't viewable from nearly every computer ever. Images like PNG, JPG, etc. are viewable from nearly every phone with internet and web browser.

Hmm....I'm pretty sure I have every NTSC NES game manual in PDF format. The folder comes to just over a single gig.

Honestly either is fine for me, if you are using JPG, just make sure you put each game in it's own folder, and you can flip it like a book on my PC anyway, it's really not that hard.

Good point, Adobe Reader is standard these days on any new PC install, and even if it's not (ie: custom built) most will come across it off some game or app cd, or just hitting up certain websites that require it.
