Ratings key:
10 - One of your very favorite artists of all time.
9 - Killer fucking band.  Or artist.
8 - Great sound, great songs, great albums.
7 - Very good, but not quite great.
6 - Pretty good.  More than a few songs you like.  You'd entertain the thought of seeing them live if they were in the area.  Or still alive.
5 - They're okay, but maybe not something you'll go out of your way to listen to.
4 - Meh.  There may be a song or two, or an album that you dig, but you'd rather listen to other stuff.
3 - Not very good.  You will more likely than not turn the station if they come on the radio.
2 - Not your cup of tea at all.  Some people like this, but you are not one of them.
1 - Horrible in every way.
0 - In the running for worst artist/musician of all time.  You would rather take a cheese grater to your face than listen to this.

7.23 - Earth, Wind & Fire
7.16 - Faith No More

I hate that genre of music so much. Just ughhhh. Its almost parody cliche music.

Yeah yeah instrument talent. Some stuff I dont like I can tolerate playing in the background. This is not one of them.

2/10

Never heard of him 'till now but uh... yeah, some good music there. (Sorry, but the first pic is both funny and creepy at the same time. lol)

Throwing out a 7/10 on this one, but like a "high" 7. Going into this unbiased, there's some killer stuff here.

7/10 just for his vocal range and the speed at which he releases music and the variety of styles.

For me, Juular, is the definitive song. Crazy video, and an endurance match for the drummer.

I will give it a 4/10. There are some good riffs but most of the songs are too abstract to truly enjoy. The guitar tone is also too solid state and compressed. You can actually hear the signal clipping.

I've never heard of him, and I honestly expected kinda garbage music, but I actually liked what I heard. Still I didn't love it and probably won't check out more of his stuff. But yeah it wasn't bad at all. I'll give it a 6/10

Did you back in to my iTunes account to see my most played? FNM and now this?

Love Devin Townsend. One of my all time favorites. Ocean Machine is one of the best albums no one has ever listened to. SYL's City and Alien are a couple of metal masterpieces. The only album of his I don't super *love* is physicist, but it is still a very fun listen. Add to that his live shows is like heavy metal stand up comedy. Great stuff! 10/10.

First time I have a strong (positive) opinion for one of these threads. I discovered SYL on a comp and have one album from them. I've found a couple DTP videos pretty awesome (Juular!) but haven't had time to do a deep dive yet. Friend of mine in the band Atlas Moth was super fuckin excited to tour with Gojira and DTP so that's another good mark for me. Voted 8/10, I expect I could go 9 after hearing more.

I'm kinda the same. Gave a 5. I respect the talent but a lot of the songs are overproduced and just have too much going on. Just not my cup of tea even though I don't dislike it.

The first "extreme" metal thread I do should be interesting, whenever that is.  Assuming we call DT a mixture of extreme and not extreme.

I don't vote if I'm not familiar and I don't have time to get familiar, but I kinda tried with DT. Obviously I don't "get" metal, but this guy makes me second-guess what I thought I knew about metal bands.

This is an honest question, I don't mean any disrespect if the answer is no, but does every metal group/song have an element of being "ironically" hard? For example, it's tough to verbally explain what goes on in a lot of metal music videos in a way that sounds like they're serious about being so "metal," and it feels like the kind of thing you have to not think too hard about, and just let it be 90's cool.

For example, the juular music video looks like an N64 game. I'm not poking fun, it's obvious they weren't trying to make everything look true to life in that video. If that song/video was made to make some serious, real statement about religion/hell/whatever it's about, then it's just plain not something I'm into, like watching people get REALLY into fandoms and stuff. (Like when people ask me "really?" when I tell them I collect old Game Boy games unironically  ) But if it comes from a room full of guys saying "haha, let's make it super over the top! We'll have this guy named Juular riding a polygonal hell-train and the one guy is all calm but then Juular jumps up and screams!" etc., then I can see how people can just sort of jump into music like this and just feel like a crazy teenager for a little bit.

Also, it's sort of a common running joke that really hard metal guys are actually teddy bears inside. It's common enough that it starts to make sense that people just listen to it for fun, a tiny bit ironically, and not to actually sink themselves into the death and satanic stuff etc, actually thinking that the music videos are cool. It's kinda funny to think that bands who are constantly depicting themselves as hard and serious are still following all the steps; dutifully filming music videos, printing CDs, making agreements with iTunes etc. It's all just a little bit forced, right?

Again, no disrespect if I'm way off. I definitely listen to loads of embarrassing garbage unironically. It might be that it's just not for me.

Oh you shush.  I'll bet there are a shocking amount of Ozzfest attendees that like ABBA.

To answer your question, even Kerry King of Slayer said you should look at their music as if it were a horror movie. Metal is entertainment have fun.
