^ Personally, I think the DS is a HUGE improvement over the older DS "phat". It's just much easier on the eyes and hands...especially after long non-stop use.
I also own a Wii, and I can tell you there are some great games that remind me a lot of the NES, but with more clean graphics. For example, people have commented on the new Wario game to be very NES-like. And, I know there are many more games that are puzzle/logic available on the Wii. I know you said no to the internet, but the Wii also has this service called Wii-Ware that allows people to download games for really cheap and are often described as feeling more old school....like NES/SNES games.
Stars makes a great point here. The Wii has a large variety of games that appeal to all sorts of gamers. The virtual console on the Wii is free to use and shop (all you need to do is to have wifi in your house or buy a ethernet adapeter that Nintendo makes), and the games a relatively cheap.
As for the DS lite, it was such an improvement over the original clunky DS that it almost seemed like a new system. Very sleek frame, compact and light weight, back-lit LCD screen. Its a thing of beauty. To be honest, I had not bought a handheld system since the days of the original Gameboy and Game Gear. I couldn't justify it. This was based on the fact that if I am not home I'm driving somewhere or at work. If I am at home, why would I play a handheld when I have a Wii, NES, and a 360 hooked up in my living room. However, after spending a weekend visiting my brother in Calfornia last year and fiendishly playing on his DS lite, the choice became apparently clear. I needed one of these. I play mine all the time, at home, work, vacation, while I'm waiting for my girlfriend when she is shopping. I also bought a "R4DS" which allows the user to download rom files via the internet and I have the complete NES library in crystal clear graphics on there as well. I'm not trying to come off like a salesman or anything, just sharing all the joy that the DS lite has bestowed unto me

. Hope this helps.
