I knew I could do it! I'm very happy with this score/run, didn't have to pick up too many items throughout the game and my deaths weren't from me doing anything stupid. I could totally feel my heart beating strong near the end haha get's intense knowing you only have a few levels left!

I would LOVE to see that playthrough!!! My problem is I go to punch a trog and they eat me. It's like me punching does nothing.

You've got to punch them several times quickly. And even then sometimes they are able to sneak in a quick punch. What I hate is when they punch you as soon as they come out of a teleporter. You literally get no time to react. It's just get punched and die. Those teleporter levels like 9 and 10 can suck on deez.

Yeah, you have to spam the button. Always punch them fromt he side or behind, but if you have to face them head on spam that button. And, if you're going in the teleporter and see a Trog on the other side, hold up to go back in the teleporter and you won't get clobbered.

Wow, some truly amazing scores, guys! We really put in some effort this week. I can only hope I have a good run and beat what I put up. It gets aggravating, though. The spring-loaded Trogs are the absolute worst.

The stages that almost always cause my first death are 9 and 10. I hate those stages. If a Trog doesn't hit me coming out of the teleporter,I'm jumping off the edge because the teleporter is right by it. Stupid. Should have known,a lot of Midway created games are notoriously cheap.

So this game is a lot like Joust to me.....super cheap. It's also quickly shooting up my own personal list of games that really irritate the piss out of me. A few minutes ago just when I was about to pass my high score so far an a-hole Trog somehow manages to catch me from way away and club me as I was entering the home base.

My feelings are conveyed quite nicely at the 2:00 mark of this link.

Joust may be having company soon....

Yeah I've always wanted to be able to record my runs so hopefully one day in the future I will actually pursue doing so! It was definitely an intense run. I kept getting into the 40s pretty consistently with most of my runs but I would always be impatient or do something too risky and beat myself up for it.  There were a lot of close calls and places were I definitely feel like I got extremely lucky!

For the most part, punching was my savior especially since I advoided picking up the pineapple, just having to spam the punch buttons to keep them off of me (fingers were definitely feeling that haha) but even with punching they were still able to sneak in a punch on you or another one/two would bum rush you at the same time making it almost impossible to get away without getting hit.

The jumping trogs were the first ones that usually got a kill on me but if I found that focusing on their shadows made things a little easier to make sure I advoided them, but once again they are pretty unpredictable with how far they jump and the direction that they jump so sometimes I just felt lucky getting pastn those stages

Even when you're focusing on their shadows, those jumping Trogs are the worst. Ah, well, the NES port seems to be way better than its arcade counterpart. I checked it out on YouTube the other day for the heck of it, and good lord....

I do like the claymation of the arcade version. Pretty cool. What usually gets me with the jumping Trogs is when you are punching a walking one and while doing that,a jumping Trog lands on you. Cheap! Going to try to best my high score tonight as I'm not sure if I will get any time to play tomorrow before the deadline.

To Claybird (and anyone else who may do it with a similar score) I honestly don't see how you beat the game, especially with that score. I guess you must have had timely powerups throughout the way and/or were able to really manipulate the Trogs, because man this game is right there with Joust as being ultra ridiculous cheap. Maybe you found effective strategies for countering all the bs this game throws at you or maybe you are just a natural at this game....*shrugs*. Would have loved to see a playthrough of your run to see how you pulled off this impressive feat because I sure as hell can't. Hats off to you! A few others may do it as well, but I won't be one of them. I am done with this game. I will probably never play it again unless it comes back up in the contest rotation.

I'm sure every one had different strategies when approaching this game but from the very get go I was focused on just getting a low score and I figured that with time I would just continue to progress through the levels.

At the beginning of the week I would just play through all of my continues just to get a feel for the levels and eventually you end up learning which type of powerups appear and how each stage is designed which definitely helps with setting up a strategy.

My goal for the first couple of levels was to never pick up any powerups unless there was no way to avoid them. The only powerups I would really pick up purposely were either the horseshoe or the ice cube. I probably only picked up a total of 5-6 pineapples and ate less than ~10 trogs in the process.

Nice! I didn't really play through the levels with continues. I did a few times and the farthest I made it was to 32. The Trogs get so freaking fast and good luck punching them, especially head on.

Yeah the last 10 levels or so are absolute mayhem haha there was one point where I was actually surrounded by mud pits. They especially like to start popping up in front of the portal entrances/exits or trogs would put fires there to really screw you over

Guts, you might have missed the discussion in the previous contest thread, but for scores to be valid you need to include a piece of paper with your name on it when you take the picture.

Didn't catch that. I'll just put my old score back up. There goes a few hours worth of gaming down the drain...awesome. Either way,I'm not playing this game anymore.

Stage 25 2,098,165

Pretty disappointed that my several hours of gameplay to achieve my better score is being discredited due to the lack of a piece of paper. Oh well, either way Trog is not being played anymore.

Just curious does anyone like this game?  I mean like really enjoy it a lot?  I am not a really picky nes lover but this one did not hold my interest at all.  Slow play plus a lot of unavoidable or unfair deaths.  Anyway was cool to play as part of the contest but i wont be revisting this one soon!  Gutsman glad to see im not alone in my distaste for this turd

Yeah, definitely a lot of cheap deaths and it does play extremely slow at Bloop's default speed. It's not a bad game,it's just there's a lot of things that make it a lot less fun than it should be. If the default speed were equal to one or two plant pick ups and the cheapness dialed down just a bit,it would be a much more fun game.

2,014,640  -- Level 29  (sorry Santa )

Decided to give this one a try to see what the discussion was all about, and I have to say... I am not a fan of this game.

It COULD have been a good game, except for how clunky your character feels combined with the way the randomness itself is truly un-fun (the tar pits appearing underfoot seem pretty arbitrary, and the item distribution can either bless you with a good game or curse you to die).

And I think the "jump off the edge" game mechanic is possibly the single worst game design element on the system.

Anyway, long story short... made it level 29.
Would have been nice to break into the 30's since I suffered a couple of stupid-deaths along the way (though I got clobbered by level 36 when I was playing through using continues), but I don't really see myself wanting to play this game again.

I am thoroughly impressed by anybody that made it past level 36.
