What's a "win"?  

 

To be fair,you haven't played much in the recent times. I've been grinding at these for the majority of the last 3+ years. 

Okay, so I had tried this game during our bye week to get an idea of what it would be like. I played again tonight and I have to say, so far it's not too bad. I dig the music! Also, I haven't heard anyone mention the shooting stage yet. That was pretty fun.

I don't know, honestly I'm barely a has-been, couple old wins away from a never-was. You guys are all so good, I'm thrilled on the weeks I hit top 8.  

I can hardly beat the first three enemies. :S

First time replaying this game since a looooooong time, of course it is difficult and foes have lots of HP, but to be honest it does not feel unfair in the first stage, just difficult arcade-like. I was expecting worse, to be honest, knowing that this is not the genre of games I have very good results with.

You need to press action buttons rapidly, but it is not too bad. Gun Smoke, for instance, is more tough to play for your fingers IMHO.

Some power ups are really worth the deal to grab them, others, like the wood staff, seem quite like the vanilla punch to me. Probably they deal more damage, but it does not look too much like to me.

Here a couple of tricks I quickly discovered:
- if you stay in this position (a step from end screen) and kick continuously, in most screens of the first stage it is unlikely to get hit.

- if you stay in this position here (yeah, wasted bullets against foes immune to them) you can kick foes without getting hit.


- you can skip defeating the first alligators and all the hawks, without taking any damage from them, just dodging them and not fighting them.

These solutions kind of worked for me to pass few screens in teh first stage, but I can't tell how reliable they are for all, or if there are better tricks to use (not cheating of course!, I mean good tactics to defeat foes easily, but still playing fair).

This pretty much my first attempt. So, game over in the first stage, and made 6300 points in this "testing the ROM" game. I am not a player who plays for points usually (I usually play to finish the game), so likely I will not post anything interesting to read about; but when I play again, if I score something worth to post, I'll update my post in page 1 with the required picture.

I totally agree with you on this.  I can remember giving Gun.Smoke a serious playthrough after I first got it in 2007 and it hurts my hands something bad.  I think the developers could have come up with a better control scheme that wasn't so hard on the hands.

I never played it in arcade, but I want to hope that it had 3 buttons there (front, left, right).
Pressing 2 button to target in front is not a nice solution, indeed. And keeping on pressing buttons continuously is really though for the fingers and the hands.
A very nice game, actually fun to play, with awesome music, cute graphics (really like the horse), but I never got past stage 2 or 3. And I definitely doubt I ever will, or I will even care enough to put efforts in doing it. And play with turbo buttons for the sake of finishing a game, it is just wrong, for the way I think and play games. Others told me it makes it more likely doable, and with a reasonable effort.

Back to Bayou Billy. Played another couple of games; so, cleared stage 1, and reached 12000 points. I wanted to take a picture of this score after taking the screen shot, but I did not know that the screen with the score does disappear so quickly!
So (in case someone, like me, does not know) you better have your camera near!



Well, at least I have a good reason to try again, and I have a personal 12000 points benchmark to overtake before posting any "official" picture in page 1.

I forgot about Gun.Smoke. That button layout is brutal on the thumbs.

I'm still hoping to get to play along this week, but it sounds like I'd be lucky to hit the participation cutoff since I've never played this before.

10000 is just about surviving stage 1. And surviving stage 1 is just about stay alive before the first ham, OR stay alive before the second ham. I mean, there is IIRC 1 foe, then 3 foes, then another 3 foes. This group has an ham. So, if you get there and you are low in HP, find who has the ham and take it. Then again, same scenario to the two alligators which you must fight (only these two alligator are forced fights). So, either in a case OR the other, do not lose a life right before getting the ham! If you can do that, you should make it. The short session where you have scuba divers, save the bullets for the big guys armed with the long staffs. In stage two, just do what you can, and should be enough to reach 10000 I guess, since I did nothing extraordinary and got 12000. Well, only three games, not much to teach about it, but it worked with me, with some luck involved, likely too.  

I like being in last place when last place is still top 8.

Haha, honestly man I was at the breakthrough point when I played yesterday, before this run just now. I just had to get past the last batch of guys, level 2 is a point mine in comparison it seems 
 

With the shooting stages,it pays to be accurate as your bullet cache is not depleted once you hit a certain consecutive number of enemies without a miss. Of course once you miss things go back to normal.
 

That boss is no joke.

The strategies that work are hitting him with some jump kicks and then quickly moving out of the way so that he can't throw you. Or getting in close and just spamming him with punches. If you punch fast enough it cancels his throws and you can keep hitting him. Or a combination of the two.

Sometimes no matter what I do he'll just keep throwing me until I lose a life.
