Well done, and welcome tablew/chairs. I've heard Temple of Doom is a pretty hard game. I know I've never made it very far in the game.

I don't think I'm going to be able to get to Dungeon Magic in time. Might try it for next year.

If you beat Ultimate Air Combat, I would really like to know how you got past a couple of the missions.
I think the levels I couldn't beat are Octopus and Fort Scrag, about 18 missions in.

So, I've been thinking about next year's thread. I remember last year around this time saying that I didn't want to do unlicensed again, but a number of people wanted otherwise, so we gave it another go. Unfortunately, we have even fewer unlicensed games completed this year. And even though it says 74/91, it's actually not very close to being finished. That's because of all the multicarts (especially Action 52), so in reality we're 99/156 with everything taken into consideration. There's actually quite a few more games to complete when you break it down like that.

I think for 2015, rather than try to complete unlicensed games for a third year, we should instead try to beat all licensed PAL games that weren't released in the Americas (I would say "exclusives," but some of the games were released in Japan). That should be our "side goal" for next year. Here's my reasoning (and don't say do them all, because that's not gonna happen):

1) The list is much shorter, and much more doable. It's about 35 games.

2) There's a lot of excellent games, like Gimmick & Ufouria. Plus, Banana Prince, Devil World, Hammerin' Harry, New Ghostbusters II, Over Horizon, Parodius Da - the average quality is much higher.

3) It gives us a new challenge and new games to play after two years of doing the same thing.

Thoughts?

Fine with me.
I own them all, except Mr. Gimmick.
I've even beaten some of them before and you're right, some of them are good like Parodius.

I think we got almost as far as we can with unlicensed in 2013.
Some of those games are just too buggy/unbalanced...
Action 52 the remaining games, except maybe 1, I don't think can be beaten without cheating.
Crystal Mines/Joshua/Exodus could probably be beaten if you allow the level skip code which is in all the instructions.

Oh, that code is definitely fair game, since it's in the manual. I worked on Exodus for a little bit earlier this year and got the first 25 levels done (not strictly necessary for our purposes since you could just skip to Level 81, but I wanted to learn the game).

The hard thing would be getting the last 20 levels done in a row -- I wasn't looking forward to that -- but in any event I got semi-stumped by a level somewhere in the 26-30 group and lost interest in the game.

Oh and I assume you're not going to include Mah Jong (Hong Kong)?  Since almost nobody owns that.  And none of it's in English.  Not sure if there's a ROM of it or not.  I'm skeptical of its authenticity but that's another issue.

Actually, I probably am going to include it. It would be kind of strange to do every other PAL game and leave that one off.  And it shouldn't be too hard since there's multiple difficulties. I'm not sure if you only have to win one match or more than that, though. Anyway, the Famicom cart sold millions of copies and is totally worthless, so it's not exactly hard to get ahold of, physically or not (Hong Kong version is the same).

So besides Mahjong, here's the other 32 PAL carts on the list:

Aladdin
Asterix
Aussie Rules Footy
Banana Prince
Beauty and the Beast
Championship Rally
Chevaliers du Zodiaque
Crackout
Devil World
Dropzone
Elite
Formula One Sensation
Hammerin' Harry
International Cricket
Kick Off
Konami Hyper Soccer
Legend of Prince Valiant
Lion King
Mr. Gimmick!
New Ghostbusters II
Noah's Ark
Over Horizon
Parasol Stars
Parodius Da!
Rackets & Rivals
Road Fighter
Rod Land
Smurfs
Super Turrican
Tecmo World Cup Soccer
Trolls in Crazyland
Ufouria: The Saga

Plus the 3 in 1 multicart (SMB/Tetris/World Cup) which is a dupe. There's also the German rerelease of Mario Bros, which is based on the Famicom Disk version of that game. But even if that counts as a different title, I'd still say it's a dupe of the original Mario Bros. since it's so similar. It has different jump mechanics and sprites.

So what I'd like to ask now is, if any of these games have different conditions for completing them, let me know now. I know for Gimmick you need to beat the game without continuing to get play the final stage in order to get the real ending. Stuff like that.

If Trolls in Crazyland is the same as the Japanese game on which it was based (Doki! Doki! YĆ«enchi: Crazy Land Daisakusen), then it has a trick ending -- there's an extra boss battle after the credits start, or something like that. Fun platformer, BTW.

Which of these games don't work properly at 60Hz?

I've decided to dust the old NES and took a look at the list to see what I could contribute with.
I managed to beat Athena without dying today.

I will try to get back to this next year, even though I can't play on the same level I used to during 2010 and 2011. Chemo killed some of my fine hand coordination, but I am sure I can still beat my favourite games without dying or using continues.

If you can beat Athena at all, then I think you're playing at a pretty high level. Welcome back.

Boom. Beat Hudson Hawk at my Grandma's house today. Pretty fitting considering that was one of the games she always had at her house when we were kids. I don't think we could ever get past the first screen as kids, but it's not too hard once you figure out the terrible controls.

Here are a few more Action 52 games I beat:
Sombreros
Cry Baby
Lollipop
They Came...
Jupiter Scope

And I'm probably done with A52 for the year.
At least we can say we did more than half of the games on it.
