Hmmmmm

That is interesting. I skipped right over that part when I read this thread. Still not convinced there is dishonesty going on here as I did not hear the conversation between the original owner and Mrdouin, but the story from Mrdouin and the story I heard certainly seem to be in conflict.

Hi all. This is Chuck with the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. The original owner of the cart who now has possession of it again reached out to us through our web site today. I spent some time on the phone with the gentleman trying to get some provenance on the cart.

He walked me through the whole story of how he sold it on CL and got it back after he found out what it might be. I tend to have a sensitive BS detector, but the guy seemed fairly genuine in his story. He certainly wants to sell the game and maximize his return, but I don't think there is anything nefarious going on other than what he said: he is on some tough financial times and needs the money.

I highlighted the key parts.

So his keeping it for his son story is BS.
He found out what it was after he sold it. (next time do you homework)

I hope Mrdouin gets smiled upon my the video game finder gods, for his generocity.

I am in the camp that would not have given it back.   Do your homework buddy.

Haha. You know hindsight's always 20-20. But I'm a firm believer in doing what's right. You can't put a price on integrity. What goes around comes around. It's a bit of a beer, but at the end of the day I didn't lose money and I still made out on a REALLY good deal on the lot.

Haven't read the whole thread (seems it's getting a bit more convoluted and dramatic), but if it's real that's a very cool find!!

Call the guy out on his BS, that is so ridiculous.

I recently purchased a sealed Powerblade 2 and a week after I got it the guy messaged me saying that his dad didn't want him to sell it, I told him I had paid him his asking price and that I was getting it graded. He asked me a few more times to reconsider and I kept on being polite but told him that I am not willing to sell it back as it is the prize of my collection.

Afterwords he tells me that he had found out how much it was really worth and that the person who had checked the price for it online had checked the used copies. This is precisely why I do not do take backs at all, even if it's me and I'm caught slipping on a price I don't ask for the buyer to return it to me because they paid what I was asking for it.

Hello all! I'm the wife of "the guy" and I just wanted to give you all the story. (however, all this drama is better than my high school days) Anyhow, my son was invited to go to the fair on Sunday with one of his friends. We had absolutely no money until payday. We were desperate. My husband was at home and I told him to grab our sons Nintendo stuff, but save a few games that I had in the Nintendo organizer thingy. My husband posted it online and my husband received multiple offers. I also told my husband to put my "special" games aside such as the ones that were my favorite as a kid, and the ones that were my sons favorites, and my unique ones. My husband wasn't supposed to get rid of the yellow game, and actually a couple of the other games that we liked but I was lucky enough to find them on sale anyway on Ebay. My husband informed me that he found a buyer and that he was going to run and meet him. Just in time for me to get the money to my son so he could go to the fair in the morning. Parents do those kinds of things. Anyway, we did find out that we could probably have gotten almost 500 for the yellow game and that it's a cool collector piece amongst the gamer geeks. Soooo, that brings us to today. We are very interested in finding out how much it's worth. We may keep it and we may sell it. We honestly have no idea what we're going to do. It depends on how much it's worth I guess. If it's not worth a lot, then we'll just frame it and put it on the wall and print out this forum thread so we can have a good laugh and quite the conversation piece. As for our friend Matt, I'm sorry this happened this way, but he still got a kick-ass deal AND my son was able to enjoy himself at the fair! Also, we want Matt to know that we have your contact information and we hope to keep in touch!!!

Oh, and to all of the negative, people out there, try being more like Matt!! It was honestly nice meeting someone like him, what a kind genuine person he is. We're good people too and have had our share of people doing negative things to us. We're lucky that it fell in his hands and not someone else. I find peace in knowing that without a doubt we would have done the same thing as well.

So let me get this straight, you sold Matt a lot of games including your "special" game.  Conveniantly, afterwords you realized that it was a collector piece and reached out to Matt to see if he would sell it back to you, which he did.

Now that you're on NA and posting something, I can assume that this was the thread that you read when you searched your "special" game on the internet.  After having seen all the frustration that everyone has expressed towards what happened (your son wanted to go to the fair, that's understandable) - you want come in here and ask what the price is so you can sell it off for 10x if not more than what Matt sold it back to you.

Seeing as it was a special piece and all and the fact that it was meant for your son just seems like a lame excuse for you guys to take advantage of someones kindness and this is just rubbing salt on his wounds.

Edit* It's also fitting that your name is Karma, seeing as we all know that what goes around comes around.

So you are basically when you found out what the game cartridge could be worth you lied to Matt about keeping the game for your son and got it back? If this is the case, you took advantage of an honest person and that's pretty f-ed up.

Wow, this thread is ridiculous!

I would have never given that game back. People on CL will tell you anything..
I've gotten into bidding wars with other resellers (who didn't know I knew who they were) telling me it was for their kids or whatever, been scammed out of $100 on a chance at 13x fat PS2s for that same price (repeat person and I took a chance on the deal.. and lost) and people getting caught in all sorts of lies when they contact me and also my main buyer and tell us conflicting stories.

Maybe I'm just untrusting of people but I think you got hosed.

ok everyone in this thread, let's stop the name calling.

THIS MEANS YOU, if you don't think it applies to you.

If this nonsense keeps up, people will get warnings and eventually removed from the site.

Learn to discuss without name calling and trashing someone else, or learn to keep your mouth shut!

The right thing to do would be for no one to bid on it once it's put up for auction, but obviously that wont happen and people here are going to support a family for lying to an honest man. I was going to originally post last night with my thoughts on this, but decided to see how it would play out instead. It ended up going exactly the route I thought it would, to a freaking T.

Let me get this straight, because I may be the only person that noticed this. I'm guessing the good games you accidentally sold were maybe $30-$40 games? So let's say there were 3 of them. Doing the math, you sold this lot of all these games to Matt for $120 as he stated, then you bought these 3 games back for somewhere around $120. So you......gave away all the other games for free? I don't get it. Where did the fair money come from? The fair fairy?

Man, there are some disgustingly selfish people on NA, I can't believe what I'm reading here.

Originally posted by: Mrdouin

So I have some pretty bad news. The guy that sold the lot of games texted me this morning and said it was an accident and that he didn't mean for that game to be in the lot. I hummed and hawed over it because the Craigslist add even had the yellow cart in the picture. He said his family fell on hard times and he had to sell some stuff but there were certain items he was saving for his boy and that cart was one of them. I felt horrible and let him know that I had already been offered $500 for the game, but I didn't want to be that guy. So he said he'd trade some games and cash to get it back. So I sold back to him for $80 and mega man five. I still did get a great deal, because I bought a top loader with 77 games and an official Nintendo storage unit for controllers, gun, and games for 120. It was tough but I felt like I had to do the right thing. So I got a great deal still and he got that extremely rare game back. What goes around comes around though. I did point him to this forum so hopefully he pops in and makes it available to those who are interested. Thanks everyone for all the great response I received on this forum. I have the guys number if you are interested and want to make him an offer on it pm me.
So for everyone who says the guy is lying, where's the lies?

1) Didn't mean for that game to be in the lot... True, it was his wife's.  You guys never had your mom sell any of your shit?

2) Fell on hard times and had to sell some stuff... True.  Needed his kid to go to the fair and couldn't afford it.  Well EXCUSE HIM for wanting to maximize his return.  I'd rather see a parent please their kid with a massive resell then some "Collector" who puts it on a shelf or resells it to finance more wants.  Sorry, but they obviously need the money more than someone who has money to blow on video games every week on NA.

I think people are misconstruing the story.  Or they are just blinded my selfishness.

If it's an internet deal, sure I'd probably be inclined to keep it.  The internet is anonymous and I'm not paying return shipping to undo a deal.

But it was a face to face deal.  If the guy rolls up in a BMW and suit, then yeah, probably don't give it back.  If he rolls up in a dilapidated minivan with car seats in the back, I'd give it back.  Being humble and sympathic to others should be more important than adding some game to your shelf.

Sometimes I'm disgusted to be associated with collectors, this is one of those times.

Mrdouin... send me a PM with your paypal and I'll send you a small gift for being a nice guy.  Best wishes with your collection.
