2016 WEEK 2 SANTA WEEKLY NEWS UPDATE!!! - TETRIS
*****************************************************************************************************************
Week 1 is in the rear view mirror and Week 2 is less than 24 hours away from doing the same.
The contests are off to a healthy start this year with
34 valid submitted scores last week and
31 valid scores already submitted this week with time still left on the clock.
Hopefully a few more people can posts scores before the clock strikes 11:00 tomorrow night.
With so many NA Members participating there are lots of stories to discuss.
Let's get on to those weekly highlights!

TETRIS MASTERS LOOK TO SHAKE UP THE YEARLY LEADERBOARDS WITH MONSTER SCORES THIS WEEK
Two top pros post scores that shock the competition
As the majority of players unholster their controllers to battle it out in a week long quest to up their position on the leaderboards, two top Tetris players appeared relatively early in the week to show the rest of us how it's done.
GameboyRicky struck first dropping an amazing score of
466,774 on the rest of the competition. At the time of his posting, no other competitor was within 200,000 points of that mark. Ricky is a well-known Dr. Mario supreme Master and puzzle games are in his wheelhouse. This writer personally thought that no one would be able to touch his score this week. There was one NA'er that slipped my mind though...
ENTER:
UncleTusk! Vince posted a score about a day later in excess of 550,000 points (
560,053 to be exact). It should be known that UncleTusk is so good at Tetris he was invited to fly to Europe last year to compete in the PAL Tetris World Championships where he finished in top company. If anyone out there wants to test themselves against two of the world's very best in Tetris - give the contests a try to see how you stack up against these two.
Third place is currently held by scoreboard designer (and Tecmo Bowl whiz)
bertsampson with the only other score posted above 300k at
324,862.
Here is the current scoring breakdown...
- 3 players over 300,000 points
- 7 players over 200,000 points
- 23 players over 100,000 points
- 31 players have posted over the minimum requirement of 50,000 points
There are many new faces atop the leaderboards that were not there for Super Mario Bros. WEEK 1. The yearly leaderboards are sure to be re-arranged after Tetris is over.
Is there anyone out there that can dethrone the top scores before the deadline this week? Maybe NES master
rdrunner or Mega Man 2 speed run champ
dra600n can get into the same neighborhood?
Perhaps you - the reader are the next NES superstar the world is clamoring for? ...Pick up your controller and find out!

Player vs. Player Rivalries Heating Up for the 2016 Season
As the contests rage on - Keep an eye on some of these match ups throughout the year
Every year during these contests there always seems to be friends that post scores, or players that seem to finish very closely to each other. This inevitably leads to rivalries.
Some spoken, and some not.
It's only Week 2, but we already have two rivalries that are being made public.
Here are two to watch as they go head-to-head the rest of the way in their quests for points
AND bragging rights...
Richardhead vs. JamesRobot
For the second week in a row, Richardhead has publically announced that he is gunning for one person and one person only - JamesRobot!
Little is known about the history of these two by this writer, but I've become intrigued by Mr. Heads's quest to take out Mr. Robot.
It seems to be an evenly matched rivalry too which are always the most fun to watch from the sidelines.
For those at home keeping score...
WEEK 1 - SUPER MARIO BROS.
10th: Richardhead -
528,900
17th: JamesRobot -
361,200
WEEK 2 TETRIS (current standings)
11th: JamesRobot - 176,558
29th: Richardhead - 61,618
It'll be interesting to see if this rivalry can continue until the end of the season
and who will take home the total victory of most points. Stay tuned folks.
...but, this is not the only rivalry in town at the moment. Another set of old friends/rivals seem to be at it again...
bearcat_doug vs. Shane
Seeing this rivalry heat up once again is like looking back in time. Back before bearcat_doug became a contest moderator, these two would be at each other every second.
Retirement matches, epic smack-talk and even people being thrown through barber shop windows was par for the course each time these combatants faced off in the contests back in the olden days.
Although both guys have gotten older, the rivalry is still fun to watch when they go at it. Shane did not post a score Week 1, but here's the current scores for Tetris...
WEEK 2 TETRIS (current standings)
13th: Shane -
167,794
*: bearcat_doug -
128,185
Doug's scores are only for pride, but with little time remaining, the re-appearance of Shane has given the commisioner a challange he is currently losing.
Will this be the final score this week between these two?

EMULATORS RULED OK THIS WEEK FOR TETRIS!!!!
Contest Moderators OK use of emulators for this week for contest submissions
If you do not own a Tetris cart (or an NES) that is no longer an excuse to sit on the sidelines this week. After a top secret meeting, contest mods
bimmy_lee,
guillavoie and
bearcat_doug
have made an executive decision to allow the use of emulators for score submissions this week. There is not much time left, but if you've been on the fence about giving the contests a try - now is the time!

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARING BLOCKS INSIDE A HAUNTED NES CART???
NA contest veteran shows up to bust some 8-bit ghosts
Things got spooky earlier this week during the contests when NA member
laddersandcakes had a scare with an NES poltergeist. While focusing in on the falling Tetris blocks, something other-worldly happened.
While planning his next move, the blocks shown inside the "NEXT" box suddenly disappeared! Surely this was the act of a vengefull spirit trapped inside the Tetris cart.
Frustrated and scared, laddersandcakes went to the forums to see if anyone could help with his supernatural problem.
2014 Puzzle Champ
arch_8ngel was available for an exorcism.
Arch explained that instead of spirits, it was in fact the SELECT button all along. A simple press of the SELECT button makes the pieces inside the "NEXT" box appear and dissappear.
It was a happy ending for a relieved laddersandcakes.
