Going forward the competition will have two games running at a time.  They are separate leaderboards, with their own points awarded.  You can compete in one or the other, or both.

This appears to trip people up so I'm posting it again:  If you post an updated score please re-use your original post, or create a new one and remove your old score.  That will make my life easier sorting things out.

May Game #1: Super Star Wars
Rules
  • Goal -> Progress
  • Tiebreaker -> Low Score
  • Bonus Point -> Beat the game
  • Difficulty needs to be set to "Brave" difficulty.
  • Play until Life 0.  Do not progress any further after reaching Life 0.  Immediately pause and take the picture of your score and state your progress (Level 2 - 12,500 for example).
  • You cannot capture your score once you reach the trench run, or complete the game, so snap a pic during the X-Wing stage if you get that far
May Game #2: Ms. Pac-Man
Rules
  • Goal -> High Score
  • Tiebreaker -> N/A
  • Bonus Point -> Getting to 100,000 points (Only received once, so if you manage to get to 200,000 points you still only get 1 total bonus point)
  • All settings should be the default with the exception of Game Difficulty which needs to be set to "crazy" mode.
  • Please submit a pic of the high score and mode that it pans up to after losing your last life.  This displays for about 5 or so seconds so make sure to have your camera ready.

Yes and I apologize for not clarifying that earlier.  It should be set to "Brave" which I believe is the default difficulty.

No worries, thanks for the clarification! I should be able to at least find time to play Star Wars this month since I own a copy. Last month was hell in a cell for me, and I was Mankind. Slowing down a bit now, so should be able to find time.

Super Star Wars - Level 4: Inside Sandcrawler - 34,500

Waited until the last minute to play this month's games again.  I used to play Super Star Wars a lot, but I haven't touched it in years and now I'm super rusty at it.  Could've gotten further if I had played it earlier in the month.  I'll have to revisit it another time.

Ms. Pac-Man - 28,570

Thought I was going to break 30K on this run, but my thumb slipped a bit on the D-pad, I missed a turn and being able to get a pretzel, had to take a different path because of a ghost, and then got surrounded.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

Ms pacman is progress?!?

Or is that an error. Looks like killer instinct rules for waiting for timer got left in.

I assume ms pacman is high score only

I am posting this here, since last month thread is closed I believe.

First of all thank you for accepting my score, no matter lacking a proper picture.

And thank you for handling the ranking publishing.

Then, of course, that game scoring system was really a mess.
So, definitely, no blame on anyone for getting confused by it.

Disclaimers:
- I am not trying to irritate anyone, just tell a thing for sake of the truth;
- I am aware that it is a game and in the end it doesn't even matter:
- I am speaking in Webhead123 interest, not in my own interest;
- I think to be correct here, but in case I am not, which is possible, I apologize about it.

In last month KI contest, you, Webhead123, and I, ended up with streak 04.

You used this >80000 points score as a tiebreaker for yourself:

http://nintendoagemedia.com/users...

however, this is the BEST ROUND score, and NOT the BEST COMBO score, which I believe was decided to be the tiebreaker.

If the best round was the tiebreaker, then I would have 110000 (is relatively easy to score a perfect with Orchid on round 1, just jumping and kicking).

http://nintendoagemedia.com/users...

Webhead123 correctly, I think, posted the BEST COMBO score instead:

http://nintendoagemedia.com/users...

So, bottom line, assuming that you did better than my 6000 points BEST COMBO (it was 4 or 5 HITS, not sure about it), if you think that your BEST COMBO score (i.e. LONGEST SINGLE COMBO SEQUENCE) was below Webhead123 one, then you should rank Webhead123 above you; unless you are certain that your BEST COMBO score (which should be directly tied to the number of HITS, * I think *) was above his BEST COMBO score.

A way to find out, * I THINK *, it is if you guys remember how many hits your absolute BEST COMBO was.

Again, I apologize if I am wrong here, but I believe to be correct.

And again, I'm just saying it for the sake of the truth, I truly do not mind for myself, since I would be 6th in any case.

Cheers!

In my opinion, this is what would make more sense with that game.
But of course, I could not say so myself, since I am the one who would benefit the most.

Is ms pacman meant to be high score?

Progression seems weird since you cant tell exact stage when picturing score at the top

It is meant to be high score and that was an error on my part.  I intended it to be high score and when I originally posted it and was apparently a bonehead.  Fixing it now.

Well, safe to say we will never be playing Killer Instinct again. Sometimes you learn by trial-and-error.  I originally had Mortal Kombat II on the slate (it will most likely be bumped to next season) but thought KI was considered the better/more balanced game.  Shows what I know about fighters.

Super Star Wars - Complete (22,650)

Snagging a final score in Super Star Wars is tough. I took a pic at the start of the X-Wing stage as insurance but the action gets pretty hectic and your health drains quickly, so you don't have much time to fool around taking pictures. Anyway, that's done for now. I enjoy Super Star Wars. It's far from perfect but I've been playing it for so many years now that it holds a special place in my heart.

Edit: In repeated plays this month, it dawned on me that a huge (and I mean huge) chunk of the score in this game comes from time/lives bonus given at the end of most stages. This makes low-scoring the game a real chore because it means faster playtime = more points. But with a lot of patience and some creative practices, I was able to shave my score down by about 85%. Still love this game, warts and all.

Ms. Pac-Man - Complete (24,820)

I've never played the SNES port of Ms. Pac-Man before. All things considered, it seems like a pretty decent port. I wish the board didn't have to scroll but it's a minor complaint. The music also seemed particularly muddy and distorted which is unfortunate. Still, I'd play it in a pinch if I didn't have access to the arcade original.

I can last much, much longer in the arcade version of Ms. Pac-Man than I can the SNES version on "crazy." I tried a few times and couldn't clear the second level.

A heads up to Super Star Wars players: Capturing your score if you finish the game is slightly tricky. Unlike Super Empire and Super Jedi, there is no "High Score" screen to fall back on and, in fact, you can't even see your score once you enter the final "Trench Run" stage. Thus, my suggestion is that players pause the game and snap their score on the first X-Wing stage once you're down to only a single TIE or Tower left. As soon as you destroy the final enemy, the game will quickly transition to the final stage and you can't pause while this is happening.

Learned this the hard way when I just completed a run and forgot about these details.
