The EPROM looks kinda new, so it could be a reproduction of sorts. Did you try firing it up?

I'd say 99% sure reproduction. Pretty cool to find that though.

That is pretty unusual looking. It looks at first glace like someone tried to make a reproduction, but yea the Eprom is old...

Have you compared the gameplay to the currently known released proto of the California Raisins? If there's differences in gameplay that'd be a dead giveaway if it was real or not!

I've never played the normal CR, I'll give this one a run through though

What should I look out for? Spelling mistakes etc?

With everything I've seen of Capcom prototypes (and NES prototypes in general), I would say with a great deal of certainty that the game is not a prototype. Many of the EPROMs I use for current reproduction are from that era, so the age of the EPROM is meaningless without a sticker. I would bet the house on this game being a reproduction title. Sorry my man.

You have to wonder about the person that put this out in the wild though. What was the motiviation, shits and giggles?

It would have probably been after the first Raisens Proto was dumped, so that's a couple years old maybe.

It appears to be a variation of Konami's UNROM board:

There may be other boards that use mapper 2 that have a vertical PRG chip, but I don't know of any. Definitely appears to be a repro, sorry duder.

I believe there was a point that Nintendo let trusted developers (From what was discussed on NESDev, more so ones that didn't go to programming on the genny) to make their own parts to save costs as a "bonus." Like Acclaim. And i've seen some vert. konami boards too, I can't remember which ones though, probably just happened when they needed a run and it was after they were allowed.

This is a repro. They still make eproms and you can buy them new and its not unusual to buy really old ones online. I recently had to return 50 eproms to jameco, from 88', because half of them were fried and broken. That board is popular for making dev carts for personal use of repro makers. Its a good way to test eproms and files to see their functionality. What i'm getting at is the vertical eprom position is just a board type and used for certain games. In other carts of this type, wiring would need to be done since 4 pins would be floating because there are only 28 vias for ic legs.
