But then other runs where I could try 20 times in a row and not execute a single cyclone.

Could have just been whether I was "twisting" the button or not from side to side and exacerbating the torn rubber.

I can't rule out human error on my end. By the last hour of the contest, I was spent. It's not out of the realm of possibility that my thumbs and mind weren't on the same page at that point.

Holy crap. Didn't even think about grime build-up as a problem on the controller.
My Cyclone Kicks had around a %25 success rate. (Human error certainly played a factor more so with me, never played DDII before this week).
I think I'll do a cleaning today.

Double Dragon II is fun, when it reacts how your mind says it should.

the thing i love most about this tourney is there is always a nice mix of games i loved and games i have never tried/heard of. I look at the collection and always struggle to find something to decide to play and this sheds some light on some great titles i would never consider playing!

What was your favorite game this year in either the summer or winter tourney that you had never played before?

I think mine is Dragon spirit with a close second krazy kreatures

Thanks again!

Best surprise for me this year was Legendary Wings.
Spent the most time on that one by far.

Can beat it with my eyes closed now.

Grime build-up is a pretty big factor on consistently, IMO.

When I took my controller apart I was amazed at how much crap was on the inner-edge of controller faceplace (the part that actually potentially makes contact with the buttons and d-pad).

The biggest impact for me was on the dpad, since previously it would occassionally "stick" for 1 or 2 extra directional presses, which is fatal at high levels of Dr Mario and Tetris.

After cleaning, I had a few 350k+ games of Tetris right out of the gate, so I'll call it a success.

I like this question!

The first game that came to mind was Jackal.  It seems like a generic common cart but the game inside is really excellent!  I'll second Krazy Kreatures too.  I had a lot of fun playing it.

Jackal definitely turned out to be a great game.  Like a better version of what Tiger Heli was trying to be.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the Punisher actually being a good game.

(and then there is the list of games I had never previously taken the time to beat and it was satisfying to finally push through them -- P.O.W., Trojan, etc)

Dragon Spirit was definitely my favorite new game of the past season.. I really liked Punisher and Rollerball as well. I was most disappointed with Bomberman. Mainly because I thought it had such great potential, but crapped out because of the flaws with the scoring and then being able to practically gain invincibility.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dragon Spirit, it's just that I've been beating the pants off that game since I was a kid.

Rollerball was actually pretty decent, as was High Speed.  Both are definitely fair examples of what you can do with pinball on the NES.

Bomberman was a lot worse than I remembered it being, probably because I spent so much time on the PS1 entry to the series.

Holy shit was I spent. I could not spin kick that last set of ninjas to save my life. That actually became the most pivotal point of the game for me. Its one thing to have them scramble when you're playing with all your lives, but when your trying to no death it... it was practically game over at that point. It really sucked because the day before I was cyclone kicking through those bastards at will too.

I think that Dragon Spirit was pretty awesome as far as gameplay goes, but I also enjoyed the Punisher even with it's repetitive and slow progression haha

Those ninjas got on my nerves too. I couldn't find a guaranteed way to keep them from getting loose and running all over the screen. It seems like if one knocks you down, they just start running back and forth past you so that they hit you as soon as you stand back up. It is possible to cyclone kick them as soon as they run on the screen and then tag them again right when they stand up, but it is really tough to do on a regular basis.

I just beat Mike Tyson using my index finger so it's not my controller. Apparently I've developed a numbness/tingling in my right thumb from playing so much. I can barely tell that I'm pressing the buttons. I flipped the controller over and tried out the buttons with my left thumb and they felt fine.

Well, for me I'd say it's Puzznic.  I'm not much of a puzzle gamer but I like games like this, which make the puzzles more so of a logic/problem solving variety than clearing out lines or pieces at warp speed (yeah, I know there is a timer in this and we're clearing blocks, but the timer isn't bad and it's still different overall).  I've had it in my collection for years but never got to play it and now I wish I had sooner.

Like others, I also liked Krazy Kreatures too and that for me is a close second as well.

I agree.  Puzznic was tons of fun.  I like puzzlers like that as opposed to something like tetris, which I kinda suck at.

I'd say Adventures of Bayou Billy. Didn't play much of it when I was younger but I really enjoyed that one. I didn't beat it during the contest but went back and finished it. It gets alot of crap for the hit detection and all but that music is pretty awesome.

Totally forgot about Cobra Triangle. That game was awesome. I played it for a few days after the contest week ended to complete it. Definitely a game with a ton of replay value...

Yeah, that was one that I never even really knew about before the contest.

Lots of awesome games we played. One reason why I did so well the first half of the year is because a huge number of the games we played I owned as a kid or rented/borrow them a lot. RBI Baseball,Tecmo Super Bowl,Jackal, and Life Force are the first ones that come to mind. All those games I love and love to play.

Congrats to all winners of the 2014 contest! All of the award icons should be added. If you don't see your icon, please contact me so I can add it for you.

Some of you may see that you've received another award (trophy icon). This means that you've achieved somewhere from 1st to 5th place on the overall Leaderboard. This award has been added for the 1st and 2nd halves of 2014 as well as all future contest seasons.

Huh, for some reason the leaderboard icons aren't showing up for me. They look like blank white squares.
