Hello everyone and welcome to week 2 of the 2013 NintendoAge Weekly Contests!  Last week's Super Mario Bros. 3 contest was a huge success with a record number of score submissions for the week.  Everyone played great and put up some impressive scores.  Let's keep the fun going this week   Didn't get enough of Mario last week?  This week, everyone is in for even more Mario with the contest being Dr. Mario.  Here are the rules:

  • Play on Virus Level 0, Speed Hi
  • Play until Game Over
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Puzzle

The contest ends Sunday, 2/17/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will not be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

That's fine as long as the turbo function is not used.  The same goes for controllers that have a turbo function.  They are allowed as long as the turbo function is not used.

Haha, this is going to be fun. I've played this game literally one time as a kid and didn't care for it. Yet, I actually do have the cartridge, so might as well play

This is more in my alley than SMB3. Always preferred Dr. Mario over Tetris (probably because I suck hard at the latter). If only my mom was playing for me, because she was a complete badass.

That was after one warm up attempt. I'll try to raise that up, but for now, I'll sit in the top spot. Hurry and update the list!! Hahaha.

I have been playing this game religiously for the past two days, and I burnt myself out pretty bad. However, this morning, I loaded the game just to dink around as I sipped my coffee, and I started to just do very well - you ever get in that "zone" where everything just clicks and you can't explain why? Everything started to link together in combos of four, and I started round 20 with my previous score (mid 500K range).

Watching dra600n's live stream of this game the other day really helped me. I sort of studied what he was doing and jotted some notes down (overkill?), and I've been working on implementing them. That, coupled with some all right luck, gave me this beauty of a run.

Although, I am in trouble with my fiance - she asked me to come with her shopping, and I told her I couldn't because I was doing something very important. (I didn't lie, come on!)

Just got a 3DS - looking to start a DS/3DS collection. If you have any games you'd like to part with (preferably with case), PM me.

Can I use the PAL version which runs at the same speed as the NTSC version? If I remember well then the no PAL rule is void when the game runs at the same speed as the NTSC version.

No PAL?!? Even when the game is optimized?!? >

Well, explain what you mean exactly by 'optimized' and we may reconsider the situation.

Optimized means that the game is sped up so the PAL version runs at the same speed as the NTSC version.
Most of the games by the big companies are optimized, but several of them still run slower (Especially early Konami releases). An easy way to check if those games are optimized is to download an NTSC ROM and a PAL ROM and compare the speed.
If there's no difference between PAL and NTSC, then it's optimized

Thanks for your explanation!

If there's no difference in speed, then the 'no pal system rule' can be void for this game, and all other 'optimized' pal games.

Is the advantage as a pal player really that big? I always thought it was a disadvantage particularly with racing games.

Cool, Dr. Mario!

This should be fun.  Never played this one very much.  I think the best I ever did was beat level 20 a couple of times on low speed.

First attempt. I'm quite rusty so I'm sure I can improve this quite a bit.

There are some powerful Dr. Mario players on NA.

I just hope to stay out of last place this time around.
