I'm pretty garbage at this game...  I'll probably take another run at it later.

Any tips from the pros?

I'm certainly no pro Ron, but there are a few tips I can offer...

- Combo whenever you safely can. Combos (clearing more than 1 virus in the same drop) add tons more points than simply clearing viruses one at a time.
This is considerably easier at the lower levels to plan, but many times at the beginning of the higher levels there are more opportunities to do so.
Back in the 2014 Winter playoffs, NA Member arch_8ngel was able to string together entire levels and clear them all in one shot like a Rube Goldberg machine.

- Save a space for unwanted pills (and try to stack them in colors).  gutsman004 already mentioned this, but if you do not have a place set aside for the inevitable garbage pills you'll die quickly.

- Don't Panic when things look hopeless! Oh No! You accidentally sealed off one side of the level and can't get over there! Don't give up. If you dig in your heels, you can knock down those pills by going underneath that pile and saving your skin. If you want to post a big score, you'll eventually have to overcome this problem... At least once.

- Level 18 is the Gateway to High Score Heaven. (this was also mentioned by gutsman004) For unknown reasons, Level 18 seems to be a tougher Challange than the next couple stages. Get past this stage and you should be in for a significant bump in your overall performance.

- Remember, you can clear viruses vertically AND horizontally. It's easy to forget there are multiple ways to clear those nasty viruses. Sometimes a change in perspective can save your life.

- Lastly... Try not to peek at your score too much until the end. You cannot time out in Dr. Mario (although the pills will fall faster over time). Focus on combos first, then survive when you have to.
At least for me, it's a lot more fun staving off death at the higher levels than constantly watching the score tick up.

Again, I am not a Dr. Mario Master by any means. These are just the things I use to get by.

I would like to add don't get happy with the down button. I'm guilty of doing this a lot. You think you got your piece in place hold down fast then boom it went in a different spot

Yeah, mashing the down button when I get impatient has often been the death of what could have been a halfway decent run. I find that I do a lot better when I let the pieces float down on their own.

Also, if you have noisy hyper kids in the house, I would recommend sending them out to play or otherwise occupying them with a quiet activity unless you're a master of concentration.

Wanted to ask the pros here: do you fellas use both the A & B buttons to rotate? Or just use one? I've been using only the A button to rotate my pieces and not sure if that's to my detriment or not.

I use only the A button too. I don't really think it matters how you do it, personal preference thing

EDIT: didn't realize that B makes it move the other way....interesting

I use both A and B.  Sometimes it's hard to remember which moves it which way.  But it really is helpful on skillful tucks!

First attempt!

I once thought I was great at this game. Thanks for proving me otherwise! Lol. I don't know how you got that incredible score but you must've had years of practice!

Looks like I'll post my participation score later this week lol. Dr. Mario, more like PUSHER Mario the way he starts tossing those pills at me late in the level makes me think of Larry Bird hitting jumpers in my face!

I played the Famicom version.  Scoring is the same (200 pts for a single, 600 pts for a double).  Hopefully, this is okay.

My score is:

193,800

So what's everyone's diagnosis? Fever or Chill? Me, personally I'm more of a Chill guy.

I prefer Chill also, but I don't mind Fever so I'll use it sometimes.

I improved my score a bit.  I'm happy that I'm slowly getting better, and broke the 200,000 mark, but I'm not sure how much more I can get out of it with just a few more days to practice and learn.

I did the same thing last night and it wasn't enough crack the top ten. I might as well start practicing on R.C. Pro-Am since I'm way better at sports games.

If it the same noise mine started making, it lasted about 6-8 more months before dying.  I kept an eye out on craigslist during that time, and just found a trinitron for free, so maybe start looking for another.  Then again, I could be totally wrong about what that noise means.

Now I just need to find a sturdier table to support my new heavy beast.

thats what i figured, all my research online said the same thing, i work in an assisted living facility and they upgraded the lounge tv's to flatscreens and the maintainance guy offered this one to me . they were on 24/7/365 so it definitely has alot of hours logged. it was made in 1999 so it owes me nothing. just figured maybe someone would have a nifty home remedy for it.

Mine home cure for the longest time was what you said, just beating it with whatever was available.  At first the buzz would go away, then it was constant, then the image would flicker and turn black, turning back on if hit on the sides, then it was completely dead. So you might be on stage 2 of CRT death, based on my experience.

Ever since I played this game as a kid, I always sing the lyrics to this commercial while listening to the Fever song. Is it just me, or are these 2 songs very identical?

I gave it a go, and got 50000 or something like that. Unfortunately, it's not Double Dragon, but I feel like I made progress since the last time.
Gonna give it another shot right now.
