Thanks guys!

Just fast-forwarded through the tape.  Here are a few stats:

Score: 8,215,000
Distance: Loop 14, Stage 3
Points/Loop: About 615,000
Time: 3 hours, 20 min
Time/Loop: 15 min

My Twin Galaxies run was just over 4 hours and was also done on 1 life.  The 1-life thing is pretty much a requirement on Gradius games anyway.  On later loops, your first death usually leads to the immediate loss of all your other men, because you lose all of your powerups.  One time I died with 80-something men in reserve and lost them all without advancing any further!

Here's a sample loop from my Twin Galaxies run, which I played pretty much the same way as I did tonight.  Please excuse the crappy video quality.  This was made before I got a capture card.

I can also post a video of tonight's run if anyone wants to see it.  Would take a couple of days to capture it, but I'd be willing to.

Do you always get the warp to skip stage 4?

I ask this cause I always got the warp after stage 3 this week, and I use to simply never get it when I played the game before. Any explanations?

Yup, the explanation is that your skills on Stage 3 have improved.   You get the warp by destroying at least 10 of the stone heads.

There's also a way to skip Stage 2 if you complete Stage 1 with your scoreboard "just so", but it's tough to pull off.

Another warp skips Stage 3 if you beat the Stage 2 boss in less than 2 seconds, but this is bad because Stage 3 is a high-scoring level.

I almost always get the warp that skips Stage 4, though sometimes I don't have enough firepower and end up missing it.  Over a long game, this warp is actually more profitable than playing the game normally.  You get a 50,000-point bonus for warping and the enemies in Stage 4 aren't worth much.  Your points per minute will be higher if you beat the game faster too, since you get 100,000 for completing the last stage.

I would really like to see that I love watching bullet hell madness.

In Stage 5, do you get more points for killing the arms first before the cores?

When I played this week, I noticed that I was getting about the same score whether I skipped Stage 4 or not, so I just started skipping it. Killing the moai heads is definitely worth it.

Hey, that's good news!

Thanks for the info man, that's always nice to know how it works out exactly.

Yup, those arms are worth 1,000 points if you kill them separately, while a core is worth 5,000 points no matter how many arms are attached to it.  I tend to forget the arms and just go for the cores, due to the shortage of time each one is on the screen, but it's doable.

Cool.  I will see about posting a video of my run then.  It's a little repetitive though (the difficulty maxes out on the 3rd loop).  That said, how much of it would you like to see?

You're welcome.  Good job making it through the game a couple of times too.  You're right at the point where you can marathon this thing!

Yeah, seems like you'd need serious timing to be able to destroy the arms and core before they move off the screen.

OK, I'd like to see your video through the 3rd loop, if possible. Nice of you to share!

Cool. I'll see what I can come up with. 3 loops should be easy enough.

Thanks, Tom! So, have you figured out exactly what triggers the rapid fire glitch? I couldn't get it to activate at all during my 2nd loops.

Yup.  It's one of those things with the scoreboard.  Get your power meter over to the far right (the '?' or force field powerup).  Then wait for your score to have a '0' in the thousands digit (ex: 120,300).  Once you have that set up, grab a pod to loop your power meter back to the Speed-Ups.  There will be no special sound effect or anything, but you now have rapid fire for the rest of the loop.  No turbo controllers necessary, just hold down the fire button!

If you feel bold, you can also get 10,000-point bonuses using a similar trick.  Make the thousands digit a '5' instead of a zero, then do the same thing as above.  I call it the "Boldness Bonus" because it's risky to do this (it's safer to keep your power meter on the force field in case you need another one).  I'm sure you can think of a better name though.

Wow, I didn't think it would be that intricate. Awesome stuff!

I was wondering why you were passing on certain power ups and grabbing others, too. I was just grabbing everything for the points until the end of Stage 6, so I might have triggered some 10,000-point bonuses that way. That explains why sometimes there's sometimes a huge discrepancy in points between games.

Thanks for the explanation.

Well honestly, I didn't go for the bonus that often. Usually I would only do it when the scoreboard was right there when a bunch of pods were coming up. It's not really worth risking the whole game in a 1-life scenario by giving up your backup force field. Still, occasionally it worked out.

That's true. I didn't need a backup force field until the last stage in the first loop, but I was keeping one handy as much as possible on the second loop.

Is the rapid fire really considered a glitch, or it is something thought out by the programmers?

I don't think it's a glitch. Gradius is loaded with odd secrets, such as the warps, 5,000 points and 1ups for flying over specific locations. Most of which can be triggered by accident. The whole power meter thing is just another example of clever programming, in my opinion.

I thought it was a glitch until you explained what needs to be done to make it happen. Definitely clever!

I agree, this is definitely a secret, not a glitch. I wish I knew this for the contest, but I doubt it would have changed my score a lot, but maybe. I have absolutely no problem smashing rapidly the fire button while controlling the spaceship, but simply holding down the button is definitely more relax.
