Sorry to bump something this old but this was the most informative 5 screw thread I found.

Since Ive complete my loose VB collection and 2 shy of CIB I thought Id turn my attention elsewhere. Other than other variants of all Mortal Kombat titles and all NBA Jam TE ports, Ive been on a 5 screw kick.

Earlier in this thread, there was mention of 3 screw carts with flat head screws. Supposedly they are the early early 3 screws per what I read. I decided to go through my collection (just shy of 120 carts) and see if I had any of these. To my surprise I found a lot of them:

10 Yard Fight
Arkanoid
Baseball
DK 3
Goonies 2
Gotcha
Ice Hockey
Legend of Kage
Mighty BombJack
Pro Wrestling

Now since I havent owed this for all 25 years of their existence I cant vouch for their authentication. BUT I did notice they are all found in 5 screw carts minus Ice Hockey. Problem with it is that the cart is so nice that there is no way someone took it apart to clean it (but still very possible).

Just thought Id throw this info out there.

no worries about bumping old threads...
This one is VERY informative.
Just picked up a 5 screw Kid Icarus today and opened it up only to find out it is a battery board without a battery. Is that normal? The board say's battery, but there was never one there. Also has the pin's offset like on a adapter board...
Figure they were just using up the last of the boards before they made new ones...

I remember reading in another thread (very recently) that the early battery boards have the same offset pins so they are misleading. I dont know anything about the lack of battery though. Thats def interesting.

No 5-screw Links that I know of. Zelda 5-screw is certainly rarer than 3-screw, but not worth much more, if any.

Just noticed while looking up Donkey Kong 3 that the information for that game seems off. Otherwise there's two DKs listed and the lower one's info doesn't match up.

My information shows the Relative Rarity of the DK3 is a 2 with the 3screw being more rare. So it would read:

DK3 Yes Yes 2 3screw

I wasn't aware that Soccer and Volleyball were rare as a 3 screw. Well lucky me.

That is funny. I was into collecting both 5 and 3 screws at one time...I was replacing all the 5's with 3's on my shelf so everything looked the same. Then I sold all my 5 screws to Braveheart at the PRGE last year. I guess the passion never caught on with me.

Hey everyone,

Is there a more recent copy of the 3 vs 5 screw rarity list? The most recent post with a chart is in this thread (the above post by coffeewithmrsaturn), dated 1/26/2013.

Thanks in advance any assistance.

The following games have only come in the 5-screw variation (meaning there are no known 3-screw variants, EVERY other NES game came with 3-screw variants)

Clu Clu Land
Chubby Cherub
Gumshoe
M.U.S.C.L.E. Tag Team Match (Debated - some claim to have seen 3-screws, the one on YouTube is fake too)
Soccer
Sqoon

The following have known 5-screw variants, but also came in 3-screw variants. Some are extremely rare (e.g. Mega Man 1, or Stadium Events) and some are extremely common (10-Yard Fight)

10-Yard Fight
1942
3-D Battles of World Runner, The
Alpha Mission
Arkanoid
Athena
Balloon Fight
Baseball
Breakthru
BurgerTime
Castlevania
Commando
Deadly Towers
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong 3
Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong Jr. Math
Double Dribble
Duck Hunt
Elevator Action
Excitebike
Family Fun Fitness: Athletic World
Family Fun Fitness: Stadium Events
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Golf
Goonies II, The
Gotcha: The Sport
Gradius
Gyromite
Hogan's Alley
Ice Climber
Ikari Warriors

Legend of Zelda, The

Metroid
Mighty Bombjack
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Ninja Kid
Pinball
Popeye
Pro Wrestling
Rad Racer
Raid on Bungeling Bay
Ring King
Rush'n Attack
Rygar
Section-Z
Side Pocket
Sky Kid
Slalom
Solomon's Key
Spelunker
Spy Hunter
Stack-Up

Super Pitfall
Tag Team Wrestling
Tennis
Tiger-Heli
Top Gun
Track & Field
Trojan
Urban Champion
Volleyball
Wild Gunman
Winter Games
Wizards & Warriors
Wrecking Crew
Zanac

Every other game came exclusively in three screw variants with the exemption of some Konami and Ultra games which are still not fully understood as to why they have 5 screw variants....also, R.C. Pro-Am for whatever reason has a 5 screw variant but that needs more research before being added to the list.

Thanks for the reply, JosephLeo. Is this list being actively maintained? I'm curious as I have been looking for and collecting the variants. Is there an active rarity rating?

Never seen a 3 screw for sale.

I like to believe that Soccer, and Muscle have 3 screw variants but I won't believe it until I see it for sale, or in the hands of a variant collector.

Edit: Correction

Seems one 3-screw Soccer surfaced on AtariAge....also, one 3-screw Gumshoe surfaced here on NintendoAge in 2010.

I personally had the impression that no US Soccer 3 screw was confirmed, yet Al Bailey's list have it at rarity 9 and another list on NA have it at 10. Is it just speculation or there are truly some confirmed copies known here?

I used to keep an eye out for these fairly regularly and I've never come across one. I think Volleyball was a 9 or 10 on the rarity list and I've come across several of those.
