Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  This week's game is gonna be Gradius.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Life "0" (There is no number where your lives are displayed when you reach your last life, so this will count as Life "0")
  • Once you reach Life "0," you MUST stop playing and take a picture of your score.  If it is determined you played more of the game on your last life, the score will not count.
  • Looping of the game will be allowed.  If you loop the score, please provide a picture just prior to looping the score and just after looping the score.  If you loop the score more than once, please provide before and after pictures for each loop.
  • Highest score wins.
  • GENRE: Shooter/Shoot 'Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 3/3/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will not be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

Nice, I just bought this game. But how will we know if we are on our last life if there is no counter? Maybe this should be one life only as well?

You have a life counter at the bottom of the screen when you still have remaining lives.  When you get to your last life, there is no number on the screen, indicating you have no extra lives remaining.

Okay, I haven't ever played the game. That makes sense though.

Would a gameplay video suffice? I'm not a fan of screenshots as any photo can be edited. So I would like to record my gameplay instead so it's 100% sure I didn't use any codes or auto fire. Just 100% pure authentic gameplay (I'll be using an emulator since I don't own the NTSC cart)

Well TWarwick, any photo can easily be manipulated, which is why I was asking. It was just a simple question.

Pictures are preferred, but a video will suffice for an entry   Just make sure your NA user name is visible the whole time you are shooting a video and it should be done with a camera.

video can be manipulated too..  if someone really wanted to cheat they'd find a way.  a screenshot allows for maximum participation..

-------------------------
If you have any GBA signage or kiosk I would be interested. Please send me a PM because I'm only here about once a month now but I'm still VERY interested in large system signage or small playable kiosks related to the GBA.

I guess I can do a photo since it is preferred. Thank you for the quick answer.

A video is MUCH harder to manipulate then a photo as you can notice skips or changes in a video, as noticing a photo is/was manipulated by GIMP 2.0 or photoshop is much harder to do.

261,600  made it to the boss and was trying too hard to kill him fast and I got lasered..  I had a shield so I thought I'd be ok but it killed me..  and I swear I've had the shield block bosses lasers before..  I'm not quite sure how they work now..

I keep getting killed by the boss ship at the end of level 2.
He's really tough if you come in fully powered, but he's easy if you aren't.

Finally, a game that doesn't suck! Gonna fire it up, we'll see how rusty I am...

-------------------------

"It's always amazing to me how some of the most worthless games from a gaming perspective tend to fetch outrageous amounts of money. But then again, it could be said that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I'm curious if the high bidder of the $873.04 Stadium Events (cart-only) realizes that it's nowhere nearly as rare as about 20+ games I can think of that sell for 1/10th that amount?  At any rate, I wanted to draw attention to this trend: if people say it's rare, it must be true, and therefore it must be had at any price."

I just started playing to get a feel for the game. The power ups system is unique, I will have to figure out a pattern for picking them. I think lasers are the first thing to grab, maybe a speed. I have a quick question, is there a reason we don't use our last life? I played through all my lives just to see how far I could get and couldn't see a reason not to use the last life. Just curious is all.

This will be a fun week I think.

-------------------------
I am searching for the following SNES manuals:
- Sunset Riders    - TMNT IV: Turtles in Time      - Total Carnage
- Utopia                 - Final Fantasy II
Please PM me if you have one or all of them for sale. While I like nice condition, I am interested in anything 7/10ish up.

When all your lives are gone, the score only displays for a few seconds before you're taken back to the title screen.
So that's probably why.

This is exactly why.  Plus, you have to attain a score of at least 50,000 to see your score in the high score spot while you're playing the game.  I decided on play until life 0 just in case anyone has trouble passing 50,000 points.

I may be mistaken, but can't you pause while dying?  I haven't played in forever, but I would assume you can, and I'm pretty sure the score displays.  Also, if it doesn't, couldn't the high score be used instead of the current game's score?  I'm okay with the rules as they are, but it's definitely a good question.

And now to resume my search for my camera...I just had it yesterday, wonder where it got off to...
