Turbo would definitely help. There is a boss (I think 5th level) that I sometimes run out of my spreadshot on, and I have to click insanely fast on a regular controller. It tires you out immediately, and I have lost before because of finger fatigue and not being able to hit start.

TRUE. THAT.

My hands get tired after one or two good runs. I'd give up the power shot forever for auto fire.

I mean seriously whatever game designer thought that pounding away at a single button for the entirety of a video game was a good idea should be forced to snort glass powder.

Definitely.  If you could use turbo, just pump all of your upgrade points into Offense and you'd be unstoppable.

^^ I disagree, I think the second power-up is the best, and it has it's own built in turbo when you hold the button down for 3-4 shots, which is perfect amount of time to power a big shot.

I think if you could, instead, continually pump out high-rate-of-fire turbo from the main cannon, you could easily sustain yourself by blasting the "POW" into fuel tanks consistently, since you wouldn't need power-ups at all.

No I've gotten over 1 million using turbo with offense turned all the way up. You're pretty much invincible since nothing can touch you.

Well, if you can just use turbo and "nothing can stop you," it pretty much takes the skill out of it. :-) I guess part of the contest is who has the quickest fingers!

Agree, anyone can just hold down a button. Sure you still have to have the skill to dodge attacks, but without having to rapidly mash the attack button that's one less thing to wear you down.

With turbo, it's like its not even the same game anymore. Galaga is one of my favorite arcade games.. I wont touch the machine though, if it has the rapid fire setting.

Agreed.  I tried it a little earlier with turbo on, and it was almost effortless.

I'm impressed that you broke 300k without killing the 3rd boss. Your kill rate must have been pretty high.

2,581,100 Completed

Last night, the wife wanted to watch a movie, but I got to take a crack at er tonight.

So, I got 'r done, all 24 levels.  There is no "Game Over" screen after completing the game, so you have to take the last score shown, then add the bonus. so 2531100 + 50000 = 2581100    I was smart enough to record it through my VHS, so I can show you all the screens if anyone wants to see them.

I hope this score holds up, I'll be pissed if it doesn't, but atleast I can say-- first done. I'm about 100k off the world record, so I'll be playing this some more until I crack it.

For anyone who cares, it took me 4 attempts, I cracked a mill and a half, on the first try, then proceded to get worse, making stupid mistakes and missing power ups, which pissed me off to no end. My thumbs were killing me, so I took a break, chugged some Mt dew and downed a PB sandwhich before attempt #4

1st attempt: 1,554,100

2nd: 878,500

3rd 817,800

I was going to call it a night no matter what after try 4, so glad I didn't give up after number 3.

My previous high before this week was 1,448,600 back in September.  I only tried a couple high score runs back then, because I was just trying to beat the game, not set any high scores.  I had no idea, that I even had a chance on completing this in one life.  But, if you can beat level 24,   15 isn't much harder, and the rest are pretty much cake.  17-22 are actually easier then 9-15 IMO, because by that time you are pretty much powered up, but 15 is a REAL bastard first time you get there.   Well, enough rambliing...Good Luck Everyone!

Wow...that's impressive. Nice avatar to match your feat as an 8-bit aviator.

On a side note, I was thinking to myself last night, how it was pretty ridiculous that the game involves flying a P-38... off on an aircraft carrier... in the pacific theater.

Then I thought about the game a little more, reflected on the fact that, regardless of aircraft type, you're a single plane destroying the entire Japanese fleet.

I guess I was able to write off all of that as "creative license", but the fact that they used an historical aircraft in the wrong theater of war (and for the wrong task, at that) really annoyed me

Nice, I'm surprise you were able to finish the last level on the first try, I beat this game last year and it took me FOREVER to get past the last level

Wow, awesome. I could never get past stage 15, no matter how I powered up my plane, that's as far as I ever got in this game.

I just never understood why the Japanese made a game, where you try to shoot down your own countries airplanes, or was it altered for US release? I think it would have upset people here, if back on the NES an American developer, made a game where you play as a Japanese fighter, and try to destroy the USS Enterprise, and bomb Pearl Harbor.

I was wondering this in chat the other night. Its a Japanese game, so you'd figure in the famicom version your on a mission to bomb pearl harbor and destroy the American fleet.

Doesn't change my complaint about the P-38 being used for the wrong mission (surface war instead of high-altitude fighting), in the wrong theater (Pacific instead of Europe)
