I've been wanting to play this for eons, it seems, and now I have. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

BTW, still down for a repro. That hasn't changed.

Thank you for your efforts. I wonder if this means that "Yeah Yeah Beebiss" might actually exist now...

I appreciate this anyway. But please tell me there is still going to be a cart release of some kind? I would gladly give some money to buy a cart.
This.  Due to the rumors going around, I guess it doesn't sound good (especially since Matt and Mark haven't commented on it either way...) but please say the rumors are false, and that you guys will be making a release of this...

Holy crap!!! How generous of you. Been wanting to play this since I saw the article on Retro Gaming a few months ago. Anyways, greatly appreciated.

If anyone can shed some light as to what some of these references are in the game, I'd be very happy. I don't understand some of the jokes and references in this.

By the way, I did notice that some bosses are incomplete and that some of the stages have less polish than in the US release. Some backgrounds are now non-animated, the music doesn't change during the scene transition in the first level, etc...
Maybe I'll make a list of changes.

I don't recall this from the US release, but I think I've noticed that the screen will on rare occasion glitch-out for a brief instant. You can also see it in the video that famicomcafe uploaded of level 1. Did this happen in the retail release as well and I just never noticed it?

I noticed the same thing when playing the proto. It must have been something they fixed, because I played the US release a few times through recently and never experienced that glitch.

I've tried the game on various emulators, and on all of them the status bar has some weird flickering problems.
At first I thought it was an emulation problem, but when I looked up the videos that richkakuo made of the game on real hardware I noticed the same flickering.

The US version doesn't have this problem.
Don't get me wrong, the game is perfectly playable that way, but it's obvious that some code cleanup was done when the game was overhauled for the US release.

I wonder if a more complete Japanese version of the game exists out there somewhere...
This magazine screeenshot seems to be closer to the US version with the "Parody World" title dropped and the monster eyes added:

You're awesome, you magnificent bastards! The NES game was one of my favorite oddball WTF games in my collection and I'm super stoked to now have a copy of the Fami version. A tip of the hat to you fine gents.

Boss 1-3 is speculated to be Planet of the Apes tribute. What with the ape on the horse and the statue of liberty in the background. Also this pretty much confirms it.

Has anyone taken a look inside the prototype rom yet to see if there are even more unused graphics and tiles in it? I know the Monkey and Bone and many other unused graphics were found in the final US version's rom.

Its definitely a Planet of the Apes reference. The plant boss at the beginning of level 1 is Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, hence the music notes and microphone. The Eggs that shoot face huggers in level 2 are definitely a reference to Alien. The Mummy Boss in level 3 is, what Im assuming to be a reference to "Dawn of the Mummy" which was popular in Japan at the time, but it really could refer to any film featuring a Mummy. The Walking head boss in level 3 is definitely a reference to John Carpenter's The Thing. It shoots X's at you because in Japan the film is called "X - The Thing". The second boss of level 4 is clearly Gizmo who then turns into Stripe from Gremlins!!! Round 7 stage enemies are based off of The Elephant Man, Im assuming Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, and Hopping Vampires from Chinese legend and featured in many films (which were very popular on VHS in Japan in the 80s) The caterpillar boss on the bed is probably a reference to A Nightmare on Elm street part 3, The 2nd boss of level 7 is a Queen Alien that shoots facehuggers at you!....and Thats as far as Ive made it.

Thanks for the info. I'd imagine the mummy is indeed a reference to SOMETHING since they took the time to turn it into the weird see through mummy thing in the US release... but who knows.

There's some obvious references with the regular enemies, some of which remained in the US, like Jason Voorhees, the (literal) Elephant Man, what looks to be Dracula in the cave stage (changed to some sort of goblin looking thing in the US release), and the little shark in the lake stage with the large menacing fin is likely a reference to Jaws.

I'm curious about Medusa if the design is referencing some specific movie's Medusa since they turned her into a snake with snake hair in the west.

Im wondering if the game was designed by Bandai as it appears in the West  first and THEN Shinsei purchased it and began to alter it into the Horror parody for the Japanese market? They both state 1989 in the title screen copyright. Are the EXACT production dates for the Japanese and US version known?

Hmmm I don't think that's the case. There are some other tweaks between the two versions that make it seem like the JP version is indeed the original, like the lack of flashing BG in the cave stage, no changing music in the first stage when the graphics become more horrifying, less sound effects in boss arenas, and other things like how the speaker object is still present during the plant boss in the US despite lacking a visible sprite and apparently some left over data representing the crumbled New York and Statue of Liberty in the US code..

Ah, true that. This games gone through such a hefty editing process, the Famitsu magazine screenshots look absolutley NOTHING like this close to final version. Especially the background to level 1, it looks like a sunset in the early Famitsu photos!
