80,370 (Round 10)

When I was a kid, I thought this game was crap.  As an adult, I still think this game is crap.  I really hope some of you got some enjoyment out of this game because I did not.

217,620 -- round 17

This one is tough on the thumb if you don't get it right on the first play-through.

Took me 3 or 4 games between 150k and 195k to finally break 200k.

I can see how a max-out is possible, but the margin of error goes to zero after round 12, or so, since you don't start with enough lives to lock the timer if you die.

The hit detection really isn't that bad, since it is at least consistent.
It is all about using the "bad hit detection" to your advantage in picking up out-of-plane coins or hitting out-of-plane enemies for points.
On this play-through, I was tending hit both RC cars, both barrels, and 1 of the 2 turtles.

^I like this game but man is that hit detection terrible. Especially when it comes to the moving objects like the volleyball and baseball. And I'm not sure if I've played a game in the contests that was more of a good run disrupter than this one when it comes to making a mistake. No matter how good of a run you are having, one crash pretty much ends it....after round 3 anyway.

You can survive a single crash all the way up to round 11, I think.

you MIGHT be able to survive a single crash in 12 and later if you go balls out and pick up speed using the oil slicks, but I wouldn't count on it.

The hit detection is "bad" in the sense that it violates 3 dimensional physics, in that the planes don't line up correctly.
BUT it is consistent, so it is easy to use to your advantage while avoiding cheap kills from the bouncing objects.

the main thing I never figured out was how to get points from rail grinding.  I managed to successfully grind rails, but never saw any associated points.

You can only grind the tall rail in the middle of the course for points.  Hop on and off and back on.  1000 points each time.

I didn't think you could land on the barrels for points.  I'm going to give this another go, although I doubt I'll get as high as I did a few days ago.

I don't think you have to worry about someone beating you out for first place.

Yeah, you can hit any moving object, but the hit detection model makes it extremely dicey to try and kill bouncing enemies.

i have killed the baseballs before, but it feels like it has a low chance of success, and I don't completely understand the model of which thing wins a contact battle.

I could have sworn that I had this game, but oh well. Took me a while to figure out how to jump with the skateboard.

Updated my score. I didn't think I was going to have any time after the change but I just got in and only had time for just one run. I wish I had more time. Good scores so far.

A couple of final tips for anybody that wants to try to max out the skateboarding in the future...

1) I tried to say this earlier but I don't know if it was completely clear: take advantage of the weird hit detection.

By that I mean you can be significantly in "the wrong plane" and kill rolling enemies as long as you appear to move through them on the way down from a jump. This is worth between 4k and 6k, per lap.

2) by learning the high point coin layout (that gets the 2400 pt coin) you can know precisely when to care about coins and when to just grab everything instead

3) the bottom is the safest place to be. Other that one bouncing volleyball that can kill you due to bad hit detection, you can safely ride the bottom of the screen the entire way if you learn the jump pattern. MUCH safer than trying to dodge all of the enemies in the field.

For those who mastered the surfing, how does it work? I felt like I was always fighting the controls and could never get better than like 10,000 points.

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

Surfing is where you will start getting most of your points. You'll learn that the controls are more of an up/down rather than left/right. I wish I could show you in person.
