I guess that works.
It would be so much easier if the bloody thing showed the wave number somewhere at the screen.

Joust's controls are annoying to get used to. I didn't understand them until looking it up on Gamefaqs. You increase your walking speed with multiple taps of the directional button, and your ostrich will keep walking/running at the set speed until you tap the opposition direction to break. You can hold B to flap continuously or keep tapping A for individual flaps ("flap" not "fap").

The natural tendency when on the ground is to just to hold the directional button which makes your ostrich zip around at top speed and hard to control.
