Sorry, but I gotta say never anyway!  Without the ROM, the information is legitimately not available for the "restoration" to occur.  After the ROM is made public that will obviously change.  Until then, it just can't happen.

That's definitely the main problem, not knowing anything about what's actually in the proto aside from a few tiny tidbits of information. The more I find out about the various changes, the more excited I become. This is probably my favorite NES game at this point.

Well, that's the name of the game my man.  You have to pay to play unfortunately.

I wish you luck with whatever project you're working on, but I have my own projects to focus on.  Posting in-game pictures isn't a priority for me, and would spoil some of the fun of the release.

Hi everyone, I'm Seagull and I registered purely to say how excited I am to see that this game is finally getting a proper release.
The secrecy and confusion surrounding the game's original Japanese version is my bread and butter.
Suffice it to say I'm watching this thread like a hawk for updates.

One question:
You can see here that the original copyright holder for the game is a company called Shinsei, and not Bandai, like the American release.
Besides confusion surrounding exactly who on earth "Shinsei" are, I wonder if the Nolans can confirm if their release of the game is by them or Bandai?
Just curious.

First off, welcome!

As for Shinsei, I'm not sure to be honest. I'll have to dig through the game again. I'll post an update soon.

Are you suggesting that some of the level layouts are even changed?

Not suggesting, confirming.  There is more than one level that has a different layout than the US release.

Oh snap. So I should probably play the US release first so I can get a grasp on how different it is.

Right now. Bye.

Welcome to the forums! I registered for the same exact reason as you. This prototype has already became my favorite NES game and I haven't even played it yet.

EDIT: The first post had a few videos of game footage, and you can see in

that the copyright holder is still SHINSEI.

Interesting! Thanks for the reveal.
Now, the question I really want to know the answer to is, who the hell are Shinsei?
Has anyone heard of them before in a Game Development environment?

Well they were a company that made games. They use the code SHI- for their games, as does Yutaka. Wikipedia seems to indicate that perhaps this Shinsei and Yutaka are the same company, or at least part of the same company. The fact that the game was later released under the Bandai name is in line with Wiki ' s claim that Yutaka was eventually acquired by Bandai in 1990.

Thanks for that piece of info. Here's a link the the article he's referring to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yutaka_(video_game_company)

What do you mean they used the code SHI-?

I guess you'd call it the product/game identification code. For instance, if you look at the box and cartridge case of the Shinsei Famicom game Oishinbo, you will see "SHI-OS." I'd guess that Parody World Monster Party would have been either SHI-PW or SHI-MP or something along those lines. It looks like their logo was a dolphin in a circle.

So Monster Party was a Yutaka game, that was taken in by Bandai, and during the acquisition process, they pushed through a series of (really not that strong) censorship reforms that made it just about passable to NOA, ditching the Japanese version in the process?
Seems legit.

I still don't know how the American version got past Nintendo's censorship principles for what they were in the '90s, though...

It is easily the most interesting (and, dare I say, important?) threads running at the moment. Welcome aboard

Oh, edited to mention: The guy in your avatar passed away

Well, you said that you want to make reproductions so that you may sell them and gain the money that you spent in order to obtain the prototype. Understandable.
I'm extremely certain that everyone here wants to help you in making the reproductions. I offered some suggestions but none of them really clicked, understandable as well. Is there anyway we can help you in making the reproductions?

Just a small request, but would you guys mind updating this particular thread when the repros are available for preorder? I wouldn't want to miss the thread if it is posted in Collector's Corner and I certainly don't want to miss out on a chance to buy one. Thanks!

Yeah, I'd like to sign up to a mailing-list or something as well. If this was crowdsourced, that'd be an option.
Any chance someone close to the project could set something up to let potential buyers know?

wow, i was wondering if a proto ever popped up of this, and looky here, the nolans have bounced back again. its nice to see games like this landing in the right hands. btw- i was the guy who suggested the body count genny repro a couple years ago lol. right here: http://segaage.com/forum/messagev...
you know whats funny to me guys? the proto owner of the first famicom monster party says he doesnt want to release it or shed much light on it, neither does the owner of pc cocoron for pc engine. that guy wont show ANY footage of that one. youd think hed be cool enough to put the game on youtube and make a play through...the magazine shots aint good enough. anyways, i most certainly need a copy of this once its ready, so please put me down for a copy of this version of monster party. die hard monster party fan right here.

OH MY GOD!!!! SOMEONE OUT THERE HAS A PC COCORON PROTO!?!?!? I THOUGHT IT WAS LOST FOREVER!!!! HOLY MOTHER OF F-

...

*cough* Sorry about that. Sooo... uhmm... any news regarding the Monster Party proto? Even though it isn't amongst my favourite NES games, I'd love to try it. Sadly, I guess I'll have to wait even longer, since I'll have to be a freelancer... my country's economy is just terrible. Sorry for not being able to contribute.

I too joined the site in anticipation of the repros becoming available! Literally, sitting at work, I was thinking about Monster Party, and thought to myself, "I wonder if anyone ever found a proto..." and lo and behold! Ha ha ha. Happy times.
