I know this will probably sound stupid, but I didn't know this game had a training feature. I just tried it out. You can practice each hole individually....sweet!

I posted a score every week untill now. Maybe we could give a icon to members that entered 100% (or 90 %) of the weekly contest? (after a full year)I saw that we have fewer members entering the competition.Just something that popped up in my head. What do you guys think? (bimmy?)

When the icons were created for the weekly contests, I considered having one made for anyone who played in every contest in a year, but I think in the 4 or 5 years that the contests have been running, only a couple people have ever played in every contest in one year.  For that reason, I scrapped the idea because I know it's hard for people to play in every contest in a year.  However, I think it coud be a good idea to have an icon for people who play in the majority of the contests in a given year (like if someone missed two or less contests or something like that).

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

UPDATE x 3:
74 (+2)

Add me to the +2 club. The 18th hole is becoming my nemesis for the week. It keeps finding unique ways to piss me off.

This may be it for me now. I work tonight and the next two days, so my time to get rounds in will be few and far between. I can't believe I'm saying this, about this game of all games, but it helped me get my passion back after I've had problems finding it after coming back.  So yeah, I'm glad I played this.

Also, great scores by everyone this week.

Score Updated to -4. Had two aces in that round which gave me enough of a cushion to play mediocre on the back 9. I was so excited to come on here and actually hold the temporary lead.

But I see guillavoie, you beat me by 40 minutes. Damn! Oh well after that last round I thought I was done for the week but you just gave me an excuse to play more rounds and drink more beers.

Haha

I wanted to throw some oil in the fire seeing how everyone are getting better.

I hope I'll have the chance to upgrade my score before the end. I'm preparing myself to give two full cinema lessons (Monday-Wednesday) at University, and this will be my first time ever teaching. No need to say that I'm totally worrying about how this will go, so I'm over preparing myself every day.

Playing golf in real life is personally helping me a bit, but I've been playing Nintendo Golf Games since when I was 5 years old. I can shoot -16/-18 on really good runs on the original NES Golf game.

You have to use logic when putting. Most putt need to be done with the slow speed, only really steep green need the med or fast speed. Try to imagine how the ball will be affected by the ground, and take good note the ball curve exponentially more as it slow down. Take note about the arrow signs, the tiny ones are mild, the bigger one are strong curves, and I think the blacks are more accentuated than whites.

Make sure the ball actually reach the hole. A short putt is worst than a slightly longer putt, but beware of putting too strong. 2 putts maximum is enough on every hole.

^This. Also being on the fairway and in the roughh makes a huge difference....even more so with a wind in your face or crosswind. Often you'll have to go up 2-3 clubs (or more) to be able to cover the distance you need to. And as far as putting...where the computer defaults the crosshairs for aiming is a little off in my opinion. I usually have to tap it slightly one way or another. More so on hills and slopes of course.

Caught a cold so played this all day, really really proud of my score. Took lots of trial and error to figure stuff out and I lost track of how many hours and how many games. I am so done with this game. 71 (-1)

It's been a while, but I used to play the black box Golf a lot.   I had never played NES Open, and after the contest announcement I found myself at the local retro store looking for a copy.  I found it with a messed up label and dirty, but a little cleaning and pin polishing got it running.

You don't realize it until you go back to these games, but the newer golf games give you way too much information.  Back in the old days when we walked both ways uphill in the snow to play our golf games, you had to do some guesswork, kids.  Guesswork!

Anyway, I'm going to put up this score because NES Open and I had a falling out last night and I'm not sure if we'll work it out before tomorrow's deadline.  After a nearly miracle front 9, I suffered through an epic collapse as if I was reinacting the movie Tin Cup or one of several Phil Mickelson collapses in a major.  Anyway, I'm happy with the final number, but I'm not happy at all with how I got there.

Thanks for running the contest.  When I have the game or can easily get it, I really enjoy being able to participate.

(Took pics with and without the flash so the whole screen is partially visible/legible.  My TV doesn't like brighter colored screens apparently. )

I haven't played a lot of NES sports games, but this one is probably my all time favorite, short of Punch-Out and Tecmo Super Bowl.

I dunno how many hours I've logged with it, but it was a lot.  I've won millions in tournament prize money, usually resetting the game at $1 million, since that's considered "beating" this game.  I love how the computer players are easy to beat at first, then score higher as you collect more and more money.  I used to get so mad when I would start losing tournaments near the end.

Kudos to anyone who has gone under par this week, having never played this game before.  You guys are learning quick!

That's a nice round of golf Tom
Shooting in the 50's is a nice feat in this game.

^Indeed! I'm still stuck on my score. I can consistently shoot around even give or take a point or two,but finding it tough to get the real good scores. And more often than not I'm getting a 9 mph wind going against me....especially on the par 3s.

Strong wind is definitely hard to play with. I'm always tortured between what kind of shot I should do with strong wind, and more often than not, I'm not choosing the right one.

+6. Man, not a fan of the inconsistencies with the club yardage. Maybe its just me but I would feel I took enough club and still come up short (even in cases when there was hardly any wind). Ohh well, really don't feel like playing anymore. I'm out the next few weeks as I dont' own the next three (unless I somehow find them in the wild).
