Yesterday my niece learned a new word, "Mario".

Today is her 2nd birthday.

He built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need for science; science causes pain.
It's Wily and his robots I disdain.
I am a Rock,
I am a Mega Man.

That is adorable. I think it best to let young ones play retro games first before letting them play now a day games. So they how far video games had come.

That's cool dude. I got my 1 year old first cousin once removed to play Mario too. She wasn't very good but she understood the interaction between pressing a button and making something happen on the screen. It was fun to watch.

That's just the cutest thing ever.

But imagine if your smelly uncle made you play Atari when you were a kid! (I kid, I kid- Mario is fun- sorry Atari lovers)

I got her a Winnie the Pooh stuffed bear, which she really likes.

I set this up for some relatives who were in town to play with, but when I was testing it out she came up and asked me what I was doing ("What do?").  I told her "Mario" and showed her that he jumps when you push a button, so of course she wanted to do that too.

After some practce we almost got through the 1st level together (me on the dpad, and she would jump when I told her to) but for now mostly she just likes to move Mario around and make him jump and throw fireballs.

My 3 year old daughter plays NES and SNES way better than she plays Wii. However my 7 year old cousin has a hard time grasping older games. He says they are too hard compared to his 360 games like Iron Man and Lego Harry Potter.

I always think about how the newer games usually introduce you what buttons do what (which makes it somewhat easier). This video shows that in older games, you don't have that luxury and figure out how to play by doing. Egoraptor shows this with the classic example of Megaman X.

My son started playing Mario at the same age.. Now he is 6 and has beat a bunch of games.. I bought him a DS for Christmas and he has beaten several games.. His Favs are the Mario games and the Sonic games.. The older systems are much easier for them to play at that age.
