Hey folks, so I've been working for awhile on this concept for a video game. I'll probably never actually have it programmed or developed but I've started working on the OST. The game is "Japanese Masters," a ninja sidescroller action type game in early 90s SNES/Genesis style.

Added two new tracks: Boss theme and the Stage 1 theme, along with titles. These have been reuploaded for better quality.

Intro/Cutscene piece:

Stage 1 theme:

Stage 4 theme:

Boss fight theme:

i think it is a great start! the composition is solid enough to pursue producing the track with better tools. though i don't know how that all really works with respect to making it easy to drop your tracks into a game, i guess it depends on what platform you are thinking of releasing the game on (dedicated console vs. retro "style" on a modern console). i would imagine dropping a .wav into a modern game is way easier then coding music into an old game...

These are pretty good, they fit the theme very nicely!

Have you tried Mario Paint Composer for the PC? That might help to clean the sound up a bit since it's easier to record from a PC.

look into some midi-based composition software. there's a bunch of free ones, and the learning curve isn't too bad if you take the time to follow a tutorial or two. i used "finale" recently and it was alright. heres a wiki list of a bunch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Com...

I'm working on a PC haha, Mario Paint doesn't seem to have a simple way of extracting the sound and atm I don't have time to fool with downloading a program for that. What I actually did was play it on full volume and record it with my internal microphone lol. I will try to find a way to get the original audio out especially as I make the rest of the tracks.

Solid tracks although why stage 4? Wouldn't you work on stage 1 first?

Lol the one I imagine as Stage 1 isn't done yet and they go well in the order I imagine, I just have to get to them. I also couldn't do one of my themes because Mario Paint doesn't have enough notes, I think. Unless I'm missing something haha

John Romero says he developed the first stage of Doom last.  That way it would be the best since he would have the experience of developing other levels under his belt.

Whether you use the Mario Paint Composer or run it off an SNES emulator, it's simple to make a audio file from it.

What I do is use a recording program that records screen footage (like fraps or snagit), take the video file and convert it to an audio-only file. There is a way to record it from an acutal SNES to a PC, but that'll cost you a little $$$.

If you ever get a chance to find out how to record it differently and need someone to convert the files to a useable sound file, let me know. I can convert pretty much anthing to mp3, wma, flac, ogg, wav, etc.

I've played around with composing some tunes in WarioWare DIY on the DS which is very similar to MarioPaint (plus you could even create some simple minigames to go along with your music).
I also just found this website which looks pretty interesting for making 8bit style music: http://www.pulseboy.com/...

Quite a few developers make their first levels later in the game as not make things mundane and to use their best initial ideals and the earlier levels sometimes feed off this. Time all is said and done the first few levels are product of tweaks and changes made from the latter ones and would hopefully produce a smooth game with cool levels all around.

Ever play a game that has a really cool level? It's possible that may have been the first one made, or play one that started off good and kinda dulled out as it went, or the opposite starts off kinda slow and really shines later.

All this is my mad theory on it all, and my opinion. I'm could be totally wrong, but shit sounded good to me.
