Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  This week's game is going to be Smash TV.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • No excessive points racking (see guillavoie's post below)
  • Choose whichever controller setup you want
  • Play until Game Over
  • Be quick taking your picture on the Game Over screen (it doesn't stay up long)
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Shooter/Shoot 'Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 9/7/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

I'm gonna have to try the 2 controller set-up for this game after reading the instruction manual... Has anyone tried it before? I've never seen another NES game with that feature.

Considering how hectic this game can get,I don't see how see how playing with an unfamiliar control schematic would be any easier. Thinking about it,this would be fun if we could pair up into 2 man teams to play using the 2 controller setup. Not feasible, but it would be fun.

Here's a starter score. Be warned, this game is not kind to your thumb.
Yeah, I doubted you at first about the thumb thing Guts. But after about a good half an hour of playing I had to pause the game because my hand was dying.

Yeah, you have to play in spurts or else your thumb will be throbbing.

It is definitely much easier to play this game with 2 controllers.A single try will suffice to convince anyone

There is a way to over-abuse point pressing in some rooms, just don't do it, I'll add a rule accordingly.

Here's a description of the trick from Dr Robbie : ''the trick in getting 13mil +, was in rooms with the easier enemies. what you do, is take care of the big swarms except for 5-6 of the grunts. as long as more enemies were going to spawn there, then prizes would continue to appear. but, as long as you didn't kill the grunts, they would hold off spawning more until you killed them. so you could just go in a circle picking up prizes indefinitely.''

I'm going to second what guillavoie said about the two-controller set-up.  It makes this game WAY easier if you use two controllers.  You just turn the controllers vertical and use the d-pad on controller 1 to move and the d-pad on controller 2 to shoot.  It's still pretty hard on your thumbs after awhile, but I can get a lot farther in the game with two controllers versus just one.

Must be in the prize rooms as I didn't see that in the regular rooms. So far, when I've played the prizes don't show up when the enemies dry up,but the weapon drops do.

The enemies in the game come in waves, so if you figure out the timing, you can leave a few enemies left from a wave and just run around and collect prizes instead of fighting more enemies.  Once you get to the end of a room (kill all the enemies), the prizes stop showing up and only weapons appear.  If you wait too long to move to the next room, an indestructible spinning spike-blade will appear and chase you around until you die or move on to the next room.

I don't kill the enemies while I'm moving to a better spot, especially near the exits because if you do,more than likely they will appear from the exit you are near and then you're dead.

What you said is more than okay. The rule only apply so people don't intentionally spend hours in some rooms to rack up millions of points.

Oh hell no. That would take forever and my thumb would be blistered. I wish I owned this cart as I would like to try the two controller method. Oh well. I played this a lot in the arcade and even more so with the snes version, but never the nes version.

2 controllers is definitely the way to go. I got a great score the first time I tried it

Yeah 2 controllers all the way. HUGE difference in the game experience.

Don't know how I will fair once some of the shooter sages warm up, but this game was the reason I bought a 4-score as a kid.

I can't get into the two controller scheme.  It's idea in theory considering the arcade games twin stick set up, but holidng two NES pads sideways and having to stretch the thumbs to them is awkward.  NES Advantage all the way for me, no sore thumbs that way

Score: 12,726,115 (Game Cleared)

As arch_8ngel stated later in the thread, people not using the two controller scheme, like me, will probably end up with higher scores in general.  Having to constantly reset  your strafe shot changes the pace of the game, makes it a little more drawn out.

I used to be really good at the arcade version as a kid. I may join in if my local game shop has a cart in stock so I can use the two controller setup.

Well, keyboard controls on this one are NOT kind... I don't recommend emulating unless you have a twin-stick controller.

Wasn't as rusty as I expected, since I managed to get a few rooms into Stage 3 (died a ton during Mutoid Man, but essentially no-deathed Scarface).
Ended up with 5.4MM.

I don't remember if I ever beat this one, as a kid, but I know I used to get at least to the Cobra Twins, and made it to the MC a couple of times.

Does anyone recall if the bonus score calculates after the Cobra Twins? Or do you not rack your Stage 3/4 bonus until after the MC?
