Slowing down the planes isn't point racking in my opinion.  In this game, it's just a means to slow your plane down if you find it difficult to make it through missions 3 & 7 at top speed.

I agree, thanks for clearing that up!

I apologize if this was the wrong way to bring this up.

Yes thank you bimmy and I do apologize for being such a rule snob

If we're trying to score max points while trying to minimize any point pressing, then shouldn't dying in a base battle be considered the same as missing the supplies on your third pass? The base is worth a lot of pints.

So, is this allowed?  If intentionally dying right before beating a boss is okay, I could really up my score.

Ya,I could too. I was just saying I think if you die during a base boss that should end your run. They are worth to many points (more than looping levels 2 or 6) to let a run keep going.

Edit: I assumed the "no point pressing" rule included not dying intentionally anywhere especially during a base battle.

I figured I'd try to enter these when y'all played games I own. I haven't really sat down and played this one before today, so not too shabby. I might try for a higher score later, but for right now this is what I got. The red planes on Level 3 got me.

Sorry for the clutter. The NES is on the bottom left of the picture..

Wait. I just realized, can I even enter this, or is it a closed contest?

Anyone can enter the weekly contests.  It's the Summer and Winter Tournaments that are invitation only.

You're good, man.  I like that people ask questions about the contests so that we can quickly clear up any confusion with the rules and such.

Intentionally dying at a boss just to rack up points isn't recommended.  I would consider that point racking.  If you were to die naturally while fighting a boss (accidentally get hit with some enemy fire), I wouldn't consider it point racking since it would be similar to dying at other points in the game.  The reason I put the third pass rule in missions 2 and 6 was to prevent people from point racking those levels all day long.  The stage just keeps repeating if you miss the cargo drops, so I figured 3 passes was generous enough in case someone wasn't familiar with the game or missed one of the drops because their timing was off.

The concern I have is that a death during a base battle isn't quite the same as a death  in occurring in other parts of the game, as it allows a player the oppurtunity to collect a conciderably more amount of points, due to death at that particular part in the game.

So even if you did die there on accident you would in a way be getting rewarded the opportunity to collect a lot more points.

It could potentially be the difference from one player placing ahead of another.

Runs that include deaths at base battles produce quite a few more points than runs without.

It would be like if bimmy lost to bearcat because bearcat accidentally died in a few lucrative parts of the game

not it saying it will come down to that but it could.

Just to make sure, is having 3 passes to drop supplies only meant for people who accidentally miss them, or is it okay to intentionally miss them the fist two passes?

Since the rules state that you have 3 passes to drop supplies, you can intentionnally miss them the first two passes.

I agree that this should have been addressed in the original rules. Dying at a base battle should have been stated as the end of any run, just like the 3 passes in stages 2- 6.

I would simply ask to keep it fair play and just beat the crap out of those bases. If you feel you took advantage of anything that boost significantly your score 'by accident', I would recommend to end your run.

I just want to disclose that I did lose a life at one point during a stage and restarted in front of a group of enemies I had previously destroyed.  I then got around 3,000 extra points from destroying them again.  I'm not sure if that would be considered point racking or not, so feel free not to count this score if it is.

^ I wasn't keeping track but I would like to disclose that I probably gained 3-4k the same way Red described.

That is naturally acceptable by the rules.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I think the no point racking rule is just making me overly concerned that I might be doing something wrong.
