It just dawned upon me, remember the 2ds? The affordable version for kids? There it is. Turns out that we aren't the target audience. With that in mind, I think this could be a good move. I feel like it's gonna sell gangbusters come holiday season. And like it was said before, they are probably just really showing that "hey, screw the 3ds, we got this new portable toy". Thank god they didn't name it something stupid like the *NEW* 2d Nintendo Switch XL with new funky mode & knuckles.

I'm guessing they're also selling a new charger if this one doesn't come with a dock. Need to charge it somehow.

Really wish this reveal was a Switch Pro or something instead. That D-pad is the key selling point for me, but probably still a hard pass.

I'm sure it'll come with a USB-C charger, or at least a cable. If the Pro Controller comes with one, the whole system must. I realize the newer 2DS/3DS don't come with one, but I have a feeling this will, since they can just include a cable and let you plug it into whatever USB power source you choose (it's the Nintendo first-party cable that's the important part, you can connect it to the charging brick of your choosing, ie: an iPad charging block etc).

So, went from Switch "Mini" to Switch "Lite" I'll still pass, though it seems pretty neat for kids I suppose.

From what rumors I have been seeing about this "pro" isn't all that interesting either, but again its just rumors for now.

Wont buy one unless theres a BOTW 2 version, although that Pokemon one looks really nice. Good idea though, its a more on the move friendly Switch and I think it will sell really well

I doubt their main buyer for this is getting this version as their only Switch console -- i.e. $200 is easier to stomach than $300 to keep Kid #2 happy on road trips.

Definitely harkens back to the old GB times or multi-colored units that came out around Father's Day one year with a big push for linked play.

Bingo I am buying two of these for my kids that have been asking for a switch.  I own the regular switch but felt it was way too fragile for a 7 and 8 year old.  This will take the place of their 2ds.  I don't think we are the target market for this item.  It makes sense from their point of view.  They needed an entry level item to fill that 3ds and this is it.

You have the Hori joycon coming with a D-pad altough i think the placement is the key really. I use the original Switch direction buttons whenever i can but it's a diagonal grip rather than side-by-side wich i think is the controlling scheme they intended for people to use as their main one.

They are basically announcing this with the intent to sell to pokemon only fans with the new games coming out 200 will probably get more impulse buys.

I like how it states more choice when this system is all about less choice lol. The only more choice is the initial buy 200 vs 300

I could see a certain segment having demand for this, particularly for those who would only play mobile and like the cheaper price point. But for me, moreso than I even anticipated, switching back and forth between full screen and mobile has been a feature I've enjoyed and utilized a ton. But I don't think people who already have a regular switch are the real target market for this anyway.

If nothing else, it's another option out there, so that's cool.

I may get one of these. The switch is a little bulky for travel so if I can shrink it down a bit I would be happy. Plus 720p on the smaller screen should look a bit better too.

Seems like passing is a no-brainer for anyone who already has one. But if I was looking at getting my first Switch? I only play in handheld so it would have been a pretty sweet deal.

I've literally never hooked my switch up to a TV and exclusively play it as a handheld. If both versions were available when I was in the market, I'd personally buy the lite and save the $100 without a second thought.

I dont know how you people can play in handheld only. These games are beautiful on the big screen and some are waaay better with a pro controller on a tv. Looking at a small screen for a long time like that hurts my neck. Docked is better. I even got used to mario maker 2 docked mode creating. Still prefer creating in hamdheld but once i got it down docked was so much more relaxing than portable.

nah man, the pro controller is 20 fold better than the joycons. I dont even hate the joycons, but if Im playing crash team racing or smash bros or mario kart. I need those buttons spaced better like the pro controller. Tiny hand people play handheld. Real men play docked.

People with friends play on the go  . "Hold on guys, let me just pull out this tv and all this crap so I can play the game with ya. Help me find some outlets!" Just kidding, while playing docked will give you a better overall experience, it is perfectly valid to play on the go with buddies. Personally I find myself playing during lunch breaks at work or with friends in momments of freetime on campus. I'd also argue that the joycons are good enough in a lot of instances. Personally, I had no problem playing using the joycons im breath of the wild, mario kart, and pokken. This is with both the joycons detatched and attached.

It's funny you mention Mario Maker. I agree with you that the games are beautiful on the tv and the games I've played the most (Odyssey, Zelda, Smash) I almost only play on TV but with the 2d Mario games I prefer them handheld for some reason. I think I've always enjoyed 2d Mario games the most on handheld consoles like Mario Advance or New Super Mario Bros. for DS. I don't know, I'm looking down at something in my hands, I feel like I'm in more control.

Along with most on this site im no kid haha. Lol im 32. I dont have buddies walking around with nintendo switches. If i did id have to question my peer circles. Ive never actually seen another adult with a nintendo switch in public. So their commercial does nothing for me lolol.

my 1 friend with a switch has an extra dock so i can play at his place if i bring mine. Thats about as far as it goes.

and im not saying handheld is bad. I use it all the time, but exclusively? Nah you are missing out big time. These games look glorious on the tv, and the pro controller is better in every way.

Ah I get it now, it's because you are too cool to be seen out in public playing games. Well crap I guess I gotta find new friends because they are uncool losers for bringing games out in public.

Um no its the fact that im the only one playing and im not going to be the creep coming up to a stranger saying hey lets play some games. . Its not often im anywhere i can even play though. The older you get the less down time you have. Youll see one day. You are still in that phase where you are around your peers almost 24/7. It changes. Not necessarily that you will be the reason it changes but people go their seperate ways.

I actually sold my pro controller for another set of joy cons. VVV large hands here. I've always been into handhelds tho. I think the only thing that joy con is missing is a D pad so I feel like the Switch Lite really nailed what handheld mode players were looking for as well as catering to children and families of multiple Switch players.

Lol, I agree with this quite a bit, and your prior comment about discomfort playing handheld.  I can't do handheld for long periods anymore, maybe it's cause I'm old (35) lol.  Docked is supreme, I have 2 docks and can effortlessly undock from living room and take to bedroom.

I also have never seen a single person in public with a Switch lol.  A few people I work with have them for family gaming, and I dated a chick shortly that had one, but she ended being stalkerish so my girlfriend gamer fantasy hit the skids lol.

This was a smart move by Nintendo in all aspects.  They can now focus development on Switch for games and hardware - I can't believe the Switch has already been out almost 2.5 years and it just keeps on growing.  For those investing in Nintendo, party on.
