Recently I got this sweet alternate box art Zombies ate my Neighbours in a trade. It was an epic trade in which I traded away a lot of my higher end doubles I had. I was extremely happy with the deal since I think this box is one of the coolest looking ones ever made, thats just my opinion. ! As soon as I saw it I had to have it. I think the artwork is badass

So the story I heard, this is just what I heard Im not saying any of it is true or fact. Only around 1000 copies were made of this box and released only in New York ( not sure if that was the state or the city ). Apparently The Offspring were suppose to do the music for the game so they made the character on the box look like Dexter Holland

But the deal fell through, the production of the boxes was stopped and the regular one were made and released.

Its a cool story but Im not sure how true it is though. The box was made in Mexico and thats all I can really say is  fact.

Anyone know more about this box and its origins? Id love to get to the bottom of this, simply out of curiosity. I tried looking it up but couldn't find much info on it.

I Have to agree that box art is bad (in a good way).

I didn't know any of that and hopefully someone on here can add more details.

Interesting box art - I like everything about it except the font they used on the back description.

I used to own that exact ZAMN box once! Cool that you got it!

There's a few different theories out there, personally I just think it was a re-release with very short numbers, but that's just me.

Just the box has the alternate art. That's why I only posted pics of the box.

It is a made in mexico re-release. Very much doubt the Offspring connection since Zombies came out before Offspring really broke out into the mainstream. Cool story and bad@$$ artwork though.

Could be a Majesco. What does the back of the cart look like?

It's Wily and his robots I disdain.
I am a Rock,
I am a Mega Man.

Well, I'd have to say it is a Majesco rerelease as it is made in Mexico and most of them AFAIK were made in Japan. Definitely harder to find IMO, but probably not worth a ton of cash.

This game is worth $500+ CIB with this box art. I've seen killerkobra's copy in person and it's very nice. Nice job on the trade.

$500+ in that condition? Hmmmm... I'd say maybe $300-$400. The NA auction went really high last year but there's been ones on eBay for under $350 if you were looking for it.

This is also the first I've heard of this "story". Sounds like an urban legend more than facts... but I've never heard any other explanatation so who knows!

Could this have been a shelf holder/display box to advertise the game before it was released? Has there ever been a sealed one found?

^ Kinda... there was a "sealed" one sold here in May but everyone thought the seal was not factory authentic. Not sure if it was a store reseal or what.

And thanks for making me dig up that link. I really thought this was $300 at best but went with $300-$400 based on the $500 comment. Glad to see that link still had completed sales at $200 and $280, and there was a $175 one with a lot of wear too.

Never realized people would ever consider paying that much for a Mexican re release even with alternate box art. I was thinking that copy would be closer to $200 based solely on the rarity of the box, but you CIB collectors would know better than me.

The story I always heard was that for the re-release since they had to add a rating to it, they went ahead and redid the box art to be more representative of the game; however, that doesn't explain why they didn't change the cart and manual art. Truly an odd mystery.

It's certainly NOT a Majesco though, otherwise it would say "ASSEMBLED IN MEXICO" and Majesco's address would be on the back of the box. Around 95 or 96, some Japanese manufacturing got outsourced to Mexico (like for Mega Man 7), but kept the same glossy labels and color manuals. That seems to be the case for this game too, but again, why didn't the cart and manuals get the updated art?

When was the game released with this box art? Up until mid-late 1996, Dexter Holland still had long hair.

Yikes, this is way lower than I thought now. I guess some have been pulled out of the woodwork since it got publicized. Sorry everyone!
