I'm pretty sure most atari homebrews top out about the same as nes (aound 100) There may be a few CIB's that had 150-250 runs. There's actually aton of cart atari homebrews though. probably far over 100. Then again the 2600 homebrew scen has been going since 1995-1996 ish. The NES homebrew scene really didn't get moving until after the release of Sudoku in 2007. We had the Garage cart and such before that, but really NeS homebrew is just now starting to heat up with more programmers and more complex, full games being made.

I would say BK is the ONLY finished homebrew that could reach those numbers, especially given 6 years of sales.  If you add all the forums/hype/presales/support/etc you mentioned to any other NES homebrew so far it just isn't going to sell that many more than they do now.  Certainly those are good goals for a large project but would be insignificant for the typical current homebrew.

Absolutely, definitely agree with you there.  Something like a new RPG or platformer could reach those numbers, but the NES does lend itself to simpler games for the most part.

I'd love to see deeper, more complex, nes homebrews. I think the tools and talent are there to do it, but they take sooo much more time and commitment, that it's hard for even the most talented programmer to complete one solo.

Pier Solar was a team of programmers and it still took years. The end result is great, but the time put in to it was also great. Pier Solar makes me want to see what could be done with snes homebrew. Heck Frog Feast is the only cart snes homebrew that's be made and that a simpler game and was years ago.

I think that's the problem with NESDev. A while back there was some good discussion about making a fighting game developed by the community. A lot of people had good ideas, and a general design was decided. One the characters was going to be animated in the background so I guess that was a bit "ground breaking". Unfortunately interest fell through just as quickly as it started. It would take a lot of dedication from at least a group of 3 people to get something good. Still, when programming the the NES everything is intertwined together so it would be a big challenge for multiple programmers to contribute. Without messing up the different parts.

Plus the genesis is powerful enough that the main engine was made in C and they have all sorts of basic and C compilers for it, and it's running a 68K with a Z80 for sound entirely. The NES processor just has to do so much more. The NES only has 2K of RAM, But with 8/16/32KB WRAM being able to be added for other stuff it's not too bad when being compared to the Genesis. But the 2KB of RAM by its self isn't as limited as you'd think either. The last thing is ROM. You can have so much data in the memory map, every engine and subroutine, and pretty much the whole game in a lot of cases, without bank switching. That is another whole other programming conundrum that NES programmers don't have.

I also believe that the game being made in C is a reason for it. With the NES, You have to know the engine inside and out to program it to the fullest extent. In assembly, the complexity of that increases a lot as compared to C.

Yeah, we haven't seen anything close to this yet as for the NES from the hombbrewers yet. But just give it time. Something will be ground breaking eventually.

I see content creation as being just as much time as the programming (maybe because I am a programmer and not an artist).  Multiple programmers may not help but having a programmer/artist/musician is almost a requirement.  More advanced systems (that can use C) may handle more people coding but I would not want that for a NES project.

More complex games will need more complex game ideas, which I really haven't seen.  How many people here can really design a complete game like Link's Awakening, assuming someone else is doing all the programming?  Can continue at http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/...

I recently picked up a homebrew GBA game called Blast Arena Advance, released in limited quantities back in 2007. It's not on the OP's list.

Apparently there were 150 transparent carts made in production run #2. Run #1 used black carts, but the numbers aren't listed anywhere. I contacted the maker about that. Hopefully he responds.

EDIT: A joystiq article says the first run had 41 carts. However the developer, Matthew Carr, says on his site that extras of run #1 arrived after he shipped them out.

Thanks, that's definitely one I missed

I got an email from Matthew Carr (the creator). Regarding quantities, he says:
Hiya,

That's a good question!

I would estimate that there's 30 of the dark ones and 130 of the
transparent ones. I can't tell you an exact number as I didn't keep
track. It was all I could do to label them and make sure they all
worked.

Cheers,
Matt

I thought there had to be more GBA games on cart. There's probably 400 homebrew games, but few have made it to cart. I'll check these out too. I know There was another commercial title that was self released at some point, but I think the GBA may have still been an active system when it was released.

That looks like a pretty sweet CIB. Too bad it seems like it has sold out. :C

Can I get some more information on the "Hellraiser" NES game found under the OP in the "development" section? Sounds pretty neat.

Yes, I know all about the *abandoned* project from the OG NES days, but if there's a homebrew being kicked around I'd definitely like to hear about it.

Hellraiser is pretty much on indefinite hold. It had a tech demo/promo made up, but the project I believe has fizzled out.

Here's the teaser rom from about 2 1/2 years ago

There are no functionality at the title screen, so it is a dead end.
