Yay! World record holder! I'm pretty sure tons of people have already gotten way past this score before. Plus this probably isn't enough documentation for me to get on that list. But I'm really not sure how many levels there are. Everything looks the same and I can't remember if I looped it or not. Looking online says there are apparently 10 levels.

First time playing...think this one will be a participation point only for me (if I can even manage that).

The current world record for NTSC Xevious (on NES) was set back in 2010 - and has not been topped since.

That score is 236,490. It was set by Mark A. Stacy.

Anybody out there have the skill to take this down this week?

I'm guessing that will end up being broken several times this week. I have to agree with the people that already said that it seems like a fairly low score for a world record. I got a score in the 225k range last week while practicing and I hadn't even played the game until 2 weeks ago. FWIW, the guy that wrote the single guide posted on GameFAQs lists his personal best score as 415,320 and that was back in 2005. I wouldn't be surprised to see that score get beaten if someone makes a serious run at it.

I have the same problem. The ground is so bland and repetitive that I can't tell if I've passed over it before or not. The guide on GameFAQs says there are ten levels too, but I don't know if they are just going by the checkpoints, enemy formations or what. It also says that after level 10 that the game loops back to level 7 which doesn't make a lot of sense either. I got the impression that the game is basically like an auto scrolling version of Galaga that goes on forever.

Wow, this game is tough on the thumb. I never played this as a kid, but I don't know how far I'll get without some pain meds.

I did a quick(ish) Internet search and these are the highest recorded scores I could find for the NTSC version of Xevious.

1. 10,010,760 - pat33999 [uberNES.com]
2.      297,650 - Nes Archive - Bowser [uberNES.com]
3.      236,490 - Mark A. Stacy [twingalaxies.com]
4.      232,980 - Mike Cody [uberNES.com]
5.      230,590 - Gary A. Hatt [twingalaxies.com]
6.      227,660 - nenriki86 [youtube.com]
7.      225,470 - ohmguru [uberNES.com]
8.      200,550 - Matt Reed [twingalaxies.com]
9.      195,280 - flordelitaOnabru [youtube.com]
10.      85,130 - S.BAZ [highscore.com]  (...this was the highest score for this game on their site)

*.      106,930 - This is the claimed high score at [ign.com] but there is no picture/proof and this was way back in 2002.

Aside from the apparent inhuman score from pat33999 at uberNES, the scores for the NES version of Xevious all seem to fall shy of 300k.

All of these scores were either straight recorded, or reviewed by some kind of governing body.

Either way, acromite53's score already ranks among the world's best - and that was on Day 1 of this week's competition.
What kind of scores will Nintendoage post this week?

Anything over 200k looks to be a pretty solid score, but I can't say that I'd be surprised if anyone here manages to double or triple that by the end of the week.

I think the locations of the 1 ups are random other than they show up in water (at least I've never seen one on land). I like how Namco made them the flags from Rally X.

No kidding. I played for two hours straight and there's no way I'm trying that again this week.

Playing it last night, I found one in the first water pond sort of thing, one at the end of the big lake near the second docks, and one at the end of a big dresert area on land. I remember last year that I found one in one of the rivers. But yeah I was surprised when I saw it on land for the first time.

From what I've noticed, they appear in the same general areas, but the exact spot varies each time. The one in the pond seems to be the easiest one to find. I found one in a river too, but don't remember which one it was.

Does anyone else go overhand and tap a and b with your fingers instead of using your thumb? Thats the way I've always played shooters and some other games as well. It really helps with preventing your hand from getting fatigued and I can actually push the buttons faster that way too.

Not a huge fan of this game... I like shmups generally but this is from the early days of the genre.  I prefer games that have upgrade systems.

Got about 55k the other night while getting in some practice for this week.  I should snag another participation point this week.

Anybody know if the info here about the 1ups is true on the NES?

I'll have to give that a shot later. I'm going to have arthritis in my thumb by the middle of the week at my current pace, although I think my left one is more sore from all of the dodging involved in this game.

I've found the first three in those same spots and acromite53 mentioned the one in the desert so I think they're all in the NES version.

It takes some getting used to at first, but now I can't play any other way. Its like if you were playing at an arcade or using the advantage controller basically. I keep the controller pinned against my leg and smash the shit out of those buttons! I'm sure I look like a complete jackass while I'm playing though.

I wouldn't mind having a NES Advantage for these arcade style shooters, but I haven't been able to find one at a decent price. I couldn't pull off your technique with a controller. Instead of my hands being too small for an Advantage (the problem I had with it as a kid), now my hands are way too big to do it with a controller. Hopefully my thumbs will hold up as long as I stay away from playing for 2 hours straight at a time.
