I was playing Captain Skyhawk and it occurred to me that I can't ever remember seeing it discussed here. I play it a lot and regard it as a great game. I find the controls to be flawless, like how the speed increases level to level, and the cycling between the types of levels. Rewarding beat as well. No clue how others generally feel about it. Wouldn't surprise me either way if people were to generally love or hate it. Do you like the game and/or do you think you are in the majority?

If I'm not mistaken it was made by Rare like Cobra Triangle was.

Good game. One of those common games that shows up in lots and whatnot, but just doesn't get talked about much.

On a more serious note, I've played EarthBound today for so long, I feel all tense and mentally worn out.
Then you called your mother and felt better?

Really never paid any attention to the score. I always try to beat it without using a continue. I have accomplished it, but only a couple times out of a LOT.

One of my favorites because it can be played for just a few minutes. No idea how far I have actually gotten in it.

1cc is nice.

If you purge lives at one of the end base battles (die on purpose when there is one turret (?) left and milk the cargo drop stages it’s not to hard to get 1 million.

PRICE HIKE HYYYYYYYYYYPE! How many have you got hoarded away NESFiend???

Haha, jokes. The game is like $5.

Hmmm... I don't think I ever gave it much respect. This thread has me questioning my whole Captain Skyhawk reality.

I don't even own it. Will keep an eye out from now on.

Pretty darn good. Extra fun with the Quickshot joystick.

Do not have fond memories of it at all. May have to reconsider. And as AirVillain said "PRICE HIKE HYYYYYYYYYYPE!" - per the NA effect.

It was a favorite rental as a kid. The fake 3D seemed really cool at the time.

I haven't played it much as an adult. I should try to beat it at some point.

Is this the most common NES game? Either this or Top Gun.

For third party maybe.

SMB/DH probably has the absolute title.

I will try it on your call. I haven't used the quickshot in forever. I really like it for Top Gun, but always figured it would be unrealistically difficult with the speed and gameplay (mainly walls) of this game. I will let you know how badly my butt gets kicked after attempting

Its 2 bucks. And shooters/airplane games are impervious to the hype effect. I remember a reading an extremely enthusiastic thread about sky shark. Its still 2 bucks, and its a taito game.

Edit: And yes, to confirm your suspicions, I stumbled upon an old warehouse while fishing last week and came across 10,000 copies of captain skyhawk and sky shark.

Shmups in general are one of the most expensive genres to collect. They keep going up in price. For whatever reason NES shooters are usually cheap except for Gun Nac, Sqoon and Zombie Nation.

I think Captain Skyhawk is a decent game but it does get repetitious. The lack of music in-game is probably a factor in why that is.

Unlike a lot of Rare titles it doesn't seem horribly difficult. Pretty sure I've made it to near the end but haven't actually beaten it. I should go back and try it again soon.

I believe this is because a bunch of shmups did really well on the NES and sold well, like Life Force, Gradius, Captain Skyhawk or Abadox. Later on post 16-bit era shmups became much more of a niche genre. Less copies floating out there and demand keeps the prices high.

I knew it!! 10,000 copies after a price HYYYYYYYKE is a gold mine!

Whelp, mbd39... they ARE awesome.

Some are so hard they're not fun, though. See my comments on Abadox below.

Abadox is the greatest worst/most annoying game of all time. It's so incredible but it's so hard. I want to hate it, but I can't.
