Its 2 bucks. And shooters/airplane games are impervious to the hype effect. I remember a reading an extremely enthusiastic thread about sky shark. Its still 2 bucks, and its a taito game.
Edit: And yes, to confirm your suspicions, I stumbled upon an old warehouse while fishing last week and came across 10,000 copies of captain skyhawk and sky shark.
Shmups in general are one of the most expensive genres to collect. They keep going up in price. For whatever reason NES shooters are usually cheap except for Gun Nac, Sqoon and Zombie Nation.
I knew it!! 10,000 copies after a price HYYYYYYYKE is a gold mine!
Whelp, mbd39... they ARE awesome.
Some are so hard they're not fun, though. See my comments on Abadox below.

I think Captain Skyhawk is a decent game but it does get repetitious. The lack of music in-game is probably a factor in why that is.
Unlike a lot of Rare titles it doesn't seem horribly difficult. Pretty sure I've made it to near the end but haven't actually beaten it. I should go back and try it again soon.
I believe this is because a bunch of shmups did really well on the NES and sold well, like Life Force, Gradius, Captain Skyhawk or Abadox. Later on post 16-bit era shmups became much more of a niche genre. Less copies floating out there and demand keeps the prices high.
Abadox is the greatest worst/most annoying game of all time. It's so incredible but it's so hard. I want to hate it, but I can't.
