I thought it looked familliar - PMA just found a proto that looks exactly like that (which is in fact the same game) like 4 days ago.

Yeah I just found one, but I don't think that the chips had those holes in them like yours does, James. There's stickers on mine, but I couldn't feel anything like a hole when I ran my finger over them.

It looks like it's similar to other prototypes, but I really have no idea.

Did the game come in a cart case, or was it just a loose PCB?

The chips with the "holes" in them are certainly EPROMs that are commonly found in prototype carts (Jeff, I would assume you have windows under the stickers on the chips). I don't have an IM2 cart to check, but that game certainly has prototype potential.

First off, I'm totally paying you for this if it ends up in my hands....

EPROMs can be erased by extended exposure to UV light.  Basically, if you leave the windows exposed for long enough the data will be erased.  I would throw some stickers over the windows just to be safe.  The game should be backed up as soon as possible regardless though.

Oh, and after referencing BootGod's website, I can confirm beyond a doubt that the game you have is indeed a prototype.

WTF are the odds of TWO IM2 prototypes being found just days apart from each other?

That is definitely weird! These games have been sitting in people's closets for the last 20 years, then in the same week two of them are found by people of the same message board.

Nice find James!

Oh, and what kind of case did yours come in?

Isn't it more likely that since IM2 was made by ghetto unlicensed people that they just used EPROMs in their regular releases?

Here are links to pics of IM2 pcb:
http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/pr...
http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/pr...

Looking at the two, it's clear that these titles had masked roms present and not EPROMs. Going on that, I would have to think that this game is a prototype.

Hold the phone...

Can anyone confirm that the B/W labeled IM2 doesn't have EPROMs present?

hmmmm... It does appear to have a single EPROM present in that picture.  As others have stated, it is possible that IM2 had EPROMs present.

What throws me off is the fact that there are two EPROMs and neither has any sort of label over the window.

Also, I just noticed that the pcb scan appears to have the same number that is seen on the right EPROM of the prototype that Jeff found.

Alright, this has just gotten weirder...

I tried to find some more info on IM2 and IM2 prototypes. I headed over to the warp zone to see what I could find. This is what I came up with:
http://www.neswarpzone.com/x2.htm...
http://www.neswarpzone.com/x3.htm...
http://www.neswarpzone.com/im2p.h...

Three separate IM2 prototypes, and what do they have in common??? EVERYONE HAS MASK ROMS!!!! WTF!

So now we have one cart that might be a production game with an EPROM present, and we have three prototypes without a single one present.

I would assume that the three "Samples" have just took left over Epxy chips, but who knows?

It's unlicensed, meaning anything goes on these with small production...a lot of unlicensed stuff (Non Tengen) has EPROMS...I don't trust the unlicensed protos unless they are Tengen. I have some unlicensed Color Dreams protos that may be different and came from VG&CE magazine, but to me that stuff is always sketchy in general, just too hard to verify unless you KNOW where the source of the items came from. I know Kage found a LOT of stuff back in the day that was real, but he found some fake stuff too back in the late 90s...
