Another done, Fighting Force 64!
One of the few beat em ups from that generation, and a port of a PS1 game(ported years later!). You can tell from the first area that this was a ps1 game, if they did anything to improve the graphics for the 64 it was minor. Characters have those weird simple "shadows" to create faces, level geometry is incredibly simplistic, and effects look pretty bad. Perhaps some textures were improved overall? It's not a disgustingly awful looking game or anything, but it's not up to the standards of 1999 N64.
I've only played through as Mace, and only completed one play through on normal difficulty. I found her really enjoyable to use although i think she could have used some better multi-enemy hitting moves. The one she has takes hp, which is common among 2d brawlers. But in a 3d brawler, enemies can gang up on you from more directions making some kind of crowd control move a bit more important. One of her grabs is a throw, it would be nice if maybe that bowled over other enemies?
Overall i really enjoyed it and think it's a fun attempt at an early 3d brawler but i think i would be in the minority. It might have stuck a bit to close to 2d brawler roots. In a 2d game, you'll beat up a pack of enemies and advance a few steps before facing another pack. In fighting force 3d, there are often long corridors or large open areas and you just fight wave after wave. The final segment before the last boss is particularly bad for this. Less waves of enemies, more rooms would have been better. Another issue i have is how slow items are to pick up. You're too vulnerable. And since picking up items are prioritized over a normal punch, it means you'll have to rely on other attacks if you're too close to a item when cornered by a foe. It's also funny that picking up someones luggage is apparently very difficult, i guess everyone fills them with cement in fighting force-land? Also, save points are pretty far apart. You don't get your first until.. stage 3 i think it is.
There were some nice enemy variety. Particularly some new kinds that made late game quite challenging. Like the guys who regenerate health. Or enemies that block and counter alot more. I also really liked the final boss fight. He's rather tough to take head on, but since there's all sorts of weapons and health in pillars you can just run around using those on him. Easy but kinda fun.
Anyway, i did find it alot of fun. It has branching paths, which is great for replay value. I'll try to check them out later and perhaps some of the other fighters.
