WinHex works well for comparing the code to the retail ROM.

Unfortunately it seems that the ROM is the same as the retail... too bad.

The MMX 0.2? Damn, that's too bad. Still an interesting item.

I don't get it, why does it says 0.2 and it's 1.0? what the fuck.
I'm disappointed.

I guess 0.2 just wound up being the final version or something, or maybe they reused the EPROM and label for a new version without updating the labeling.

The trick with the Retrode whether the prototype is the same or very different from the final is changing the forcesize, and setting the forcesystem to the system the prototype is from. After a couple tries adusting the forcesize each dump you should get it!

Also a small note Game Gear forcesystem was bugged with Game Gear.(It wasn't being processed even though all the parts were correctly in place.)
Interesting do you have instructions or a link on how change these settings ?

There is some information here: http://www.retrode.org/documentation/the-retrode-cfg-file/

Basically plug the Retrode in by itself and you'll be able to see it's configuration file. You can then change and save that file so the next time you put in a game it'll be set to those settings, and what to look for.

However it's not very straight to the point on how to dump something exactly. I'll see if I can make a small guide in the near future! Is there anything you had trouble dumping?

Thanks man success!
Used the force system and force size and I was able to dump Stone Protectors and Batman. For forcesize use double what you think. If it is a 2MB rom use 4 in the forcesize.

Also succss dumping 2 SMS Prototypes too. Paperboy and Gain Ground. Athough undocumented, SMS works in the forcesystm field and for forcesize use 1 for 128k and 2 for 256k.
Now to dig out some GB protos I was having trouble dumping!!!!

Glad it worked!

If you ever get stuck dumping something with the Retrode just hit me up! So far I've had 100% success with it over 100 different prototypes.(Not all mine of course!) But it can require a bit of adjustment to dump the game you want properly. It really could use better documentation. After the Christmas season I'll see if I can write up a guide with my experiences!

Sorry to hear that, but thus is the way of the proto. It happens to all of us! That label could have indicated at one point it had version 0.2, but it was written over later as they worked on it and no one ever changed the label.

Personally I think the history of what was on it, and what it was used for is still super cool and one of a kind! =)

If it was Rockman X than you would of had a better chance of it being different but still a awesome game to own.

I have Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 protos that differ significantly from the final versions.  Lots of stuff changes on that trip across the ocean.

Ok guys, i'm back.
I've just recived the Mash Mode and it works very good, i've been able to dump the ROM.
I was worried to say that i'm the one who bought the Mega Man X prototype 0.2 but i decided to tell now.
Any other program to check output of ROM besides NSRT?

It is pretty easy to compare two binaries with nsrt.

nsrt -fc file1.sfc file2.sfc > diff.txt

Where File1 is your prototype, and file2 is the final version (note there are a couple of revisions of Mega Man X). Since the checksum on the chips are different, I would expect at least minor differences from the final version (though check with NSRT, that would easily confirm it).

It really doesn't surprise me that this prototype is not very different (if at all) from the final version. The US version of Mega Man X was pretty much just a straight ahead text translation of Rockman X, with a couple of minor bug fixes. It is possible that your prototype might have some minor differences in text. I've encountered prototypes like that before, such as Breath of Fire 2 and Lufia and the Fortress of Doom - pretty much complete localizations with some spelling errors. If you really want to see an early verison of Mega Man X, you have to go after Rockman X prototypes (I think at least one exists). It is always a roll of the dice to buy a prototype without having any gameplay footage, though.

Here is the ROM:
https://www.wetransfer.com/downlo...

Feel free to check it anyway you want, although as i recall - it's not different from 1.0 version.
Too bad if they rewrote the final version on the 0.2 version.
badinsults - i agree with you that the US version should be just translation of Rockman X but i was hoping that maybe 0.2 was early version they received from japan just for checking.

Yeah, it is indeed identical to the final game.
