Just to be crystal clear, here's how we intend the "no leeching rule" for this contest:

Or you propose no point racking at all?

It is possible to just run around killing easy guys over and over, not leaving levels when the windows appear on the early boards with minimal risk to yourself. Even though you only get 100 or 300 points per guy or something, you could feasibly do this forever.

Not leeching in this case is just: you enter the level, and when the windows appear, you leave. And in the case of blazing inferno and poison field, you're always making an attempt to reach the goal, not just hanging around and killing enemies without trying to light candles or collect spirits.

Holy Frankenstein's badgers! This game is fu-u-u-u-u-n. I'll def be playing some more of this before Sunday. Can't believe I never played it before now, although I seem to remember seeing a friend play it at his house once >20 years ago. Who suggested this one, was it OSG? Nice pick, my friend. This game rules, it's my new favorite. Think I gotsta go mention it in one of the nine or so "underrated games" threads.
Hey what does that cuckoo-clock birdhouse item do? I didn't notice any difference after I picked it up...

Edit1: Phew! I beat the second boss (or Shangri-la challenge, if you will). The game repeats after that with more difficult enemies. There are mean foxes and flames and also zombies in guerilla warfare in the next iteration. I wonder how many times it repeats?

Edit2:
Updated score.

So I took the time to play a few games with Marton while I'm at his house. Decent score here, fun game as well.

Oh. Em. Gee. That is a crazy awesome score, guill!
This is me when I saw that score:

Guill, do you realize that you a mere couple thousand points away from the Twin Galaxies high score?
http://www.twingalaxies.com/index...
You should really consider taping yourself and submit to TG... especially if this is your score after a few casual games with Marton!

Anyhoo, I don't think it's too early to say "congrats!"

ETA
: Btw, are the enemies different on M5-6 or do they repeat from M1 and 2? I'm curious how many times it loops...

I must admit I have not just played a few casual games at Marton to get that score, I played a few days before with an emulator on my Nintendo DS. I don't have this cart right now, but Marton does, so I preferred to do my score on the real thing.

I didn't know I was a few thousands from the TG score, but seeing there's only 1 score registered, I doubt it is much significant. It's still cool that Twin Galaxies rules are the same as ours.

The monster change a bit through world 5-6, but not that much. There's some zombie faces flying, and some strange oval blue thing flying. That's hard to tell the change exactly since the type of challenge is random.

One funny thing about the game:
Have you noticed the +1 AND -1 life item?
They came at the same time, one gives you a life, the other steal one. That's so japanese, something like the Ying and the Yang.

It would still be neat to have your score up there, even if it's not a particularly popular title. Think about it...

Haha, yeah those two "eyeballs", the one on the left has a jaggedy skull appearance and the good one is more rounded i think. It took me a while before I even realized what they were (I was scared to pick things up that I didn't recognize, such as that butterfly/owl that flies at you... and then I'd hit them accidentally and realize they were bonus items). And then once I knew to start seeking them out, I find that one of them deletes a life!! Anyway, yeah you're right it probably is a cultural thing... like in Kid Kool when you can pick up "bonus" items for Minus 1 Minute and Plus 1 Minute (with higher times leading to worse endings).

I'm extremely disappointed. I haven't had time to post all week, I haven't had time to play all week. I feel like I could've done way better on this one, an extremely fun game though.

Don't feel too bad - you edged me out for 2nd place and I have been playing all week. You obviously got "skillz"

Yeah, I got a camcorder and all, but it still sounds like a pain sometimes to record and prepare something to be sent there.
There's only one score I regret not recording, and it,s the Marble Madness one.
That record of Scott Kessler was really an awesome challenge to beat, and I (plus Randal) beat it after a full week of play.
If I would register a score for Ninja Kid, I admit I would aim for something like beating the game and see what kind of score it gets. I wonder how many worlds there in this very repetitive game?

I looked it up on AdamL's nes endings FAQ:

NINJA KID (Bandai)
-The M icon on the status bar tells you what Level you are on. Every time you
beat the boss at the Challenge of Shangri-La you go on to a new level. Even
though some of them seem the same, they are different. As the levels get more
difficult you will run into invisible structures where you will have to
battle through a stage. How many different levels are there in all? Well, as
the counter goes up you keep getting different levels until you reach Level
255! Defeat the boss and you go to Level 0. Level 0 is also a unique level.
However, once you finish Level 0 you simply play Level 0 again, over and
over, fighting the same exact boss at the Challenge of Shangri-La every time.
There is no ending. I would consider finishing all 255 levels plus finishing
Level 0 once as beating this neverending game.
Interesting...! Invisible structures, Level 0?? Looks like ti truly is never ending so sky's the limit I guess? Assuming the score counter rolls over...

Well, I definitely would not be IN for a completion of this game.
Sounds like an horrible challenge for that "Can NA beats all NES Games in a year" project.
