Kinda hard to define "known" with these kinds of things. There are obviously many prototypes out there, but some might only be known to exist thanks to magazine or other press coverage. There aren't a lot of physical media archiving sites for prototypes, so many are probably known by way of an auction (and sometimes poorly listed ones), but unless someone commits the info to a public archive or something, they may as well be unknown.
Agreed with that one. All of the prototypes and samples I've had donated to me this year were previously laying around in the homes of former developers, reviewers or other former industry people. They were "known" to those people but not to anyone outside of there.
I also think we are still in the dark ages on this sort of thing. People are just now truly starting to understand the importance of true archiving of anything video game related, and I'm finding it is still an uphill battle at that. We presently have no centralized list of who has what and where it is nor enough people actively searching.
