Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  This week’s game is going to be Mighty Bomb Jack.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Game Over
  • Take your picture on the Title Screen
  • Re-entering of rooms (if you are able to) is forbidden. If you lose a life, you can (re)enter rooms in the stage.
  • Entering a torture room ends your run. Don't collect more than 9 mighty coins at a time to avoid entering a torture room.
  • Taking a warp that throw you in a earlier stage (even by accident) ends your run. You can take a picture of your score immediately after taking such a warp.
  • Highest score wins
  • Participation: 100,000
  • GENRE: Action/Platformer

The contest ends Sunday, 9/25/16 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

Just don't collect too many Mighty Coins. Use your coins by hitting the B button if you're getting too many. I assume your run ends there in order to encourage actually playing through the game rather than players point racking by collecting a bunch of stuff, going to the torture room, restarting at the beginning of the level, collecting a bunch of stuff, going to the torture room, ad infinitum. Not that it would be any fun to play that way.

" Action zones can be split up into several portions, and contain power-ups usually hidden in treasure chests such as money bags, Mighty Coins and Mighty Drinks. Mighty Coins allow Jack to change colors; blue allows Jack to open orange treasure chests, orange allows him to open any treasure chest by simply touching it from the side, and green transforms all enemies on the screen into coins for 5 seconds. Mighty Drinks add 10 seconds to the game's timer. Secret passages can also be found in the action zones, activated by finding a Sphinx in a visible or hidden treasure chest.[2][6] To prevent the player from becoming too "greedy", the game automatically sends the player to a Torture Room if they obtain more than 9 Mighty Coins or 99 seconds on the game's timer. The only way to escape a Torture Room without losing a life is to complete a number of jumps, which are counted down on the screen. Once the player exits the torture room, Jack automatically loses all Mighty Coins, the timer is reset to 60 seconds, and the game recommences from the beginning of the current level."

The Mighty Coins have the face on them. They look like this:

This is a weird game. I recommend everybody head over to Gamefaqs, etc. and read up on it.

I've played it before, but never took the time to look it up. Makes sense now why I never made it past the 4th or 5th level. I kept going to the torture rooms!

While I was playing I found out that in the end rooms if you leave the lit bomb alone and get it last, the game sends you straight to the next end room. I'm guessing this is a no for the contest?

I'm not a mod, but it should be okay since it's a high score contest. You just won't get as many points if you skip the main parts of the levels.

This is a weird game. I played last night before the rules were posted and was totally taken aback by the "torture room" when I got "too greedy." Glad to see they're banned, that would completely suck the fun out of the game.

I would have assumed based on the title that it involves blowing stuff up with bombs, like a Bomberman game. Nope. Instead it's a very quirky platformer.

It's an admittedly flawed and weird game, but I'm enjoying it. The internet seems to hate it. Gamefaqs ratings are not good.

I love this game. I completed it this year for Scary's thread, to get the true ending you have to get the crystal balls and a certain amount of special coins IIRC. Without going into any trap rooms, my score was around 1.8 million. The GDV is kinda interesting... I'm not sure how its calculated.

Yeah that's what I expected too. Maybe like Bomberman, except 2-D and you can fly.

I owned a mint complete copy of this game in my original collection. I must have only played it for 1 minute before deciding to sell it. Kinda wish I would have kept it, early Tecmo paperwork is hard to get.

What does the GDV mean and what impact does it have on the game?

Out of curiosity I had looked up Mighty Bomb Jack over in that other thread to see who beat it, and I figured you might be a factor in this contest.

Lol, the instruction manual states that the GDV "is based on the computer's analysis of your reflexes, memory, judgement and application power." Good luck figuring that shit out Krunch!

I'm new to this game, but here are some tips for anybody who's having trouble even getting participation:

You can scroll enemies off the screen. If you're in a part of the game that scrolls and there are annoying enemies in your way, just scroll them off the screen. Of course they'll keep regenerating but this will help.

Use your mighty coins to kill enemies and open the chests. If you have at least three mighty coins, hit the B button until your suit is green to turn enemies into coins for points. Another benefit is that when you turn green or orange you can open any chests from the side by touching them without having to jump on them. When you're blue you still have the power to open chests that you can't ordinarily open by jumping on them. Be sure to use some mighty coins when your coin counter is getting high. Getting over 9 mighty coins means being sent to the torture room. But try not to run out of mighty coins for when you really need them.

The jumping controls are weird at first. Press the jump button once and you'll jump high. Press it again while in the air and you'll fall. Keep pressing it while in the air and you'll hover. It does become intuitive after awhile.

The jars of red liquid add seconds to the timer. But if you get over 99 seconds, you're sent to the torture room and your run ends.

The bombs in the first part of each level are only for points. You don't have to grab them all. Nor do you need to open all the chests (it might be necessary for finding whatever it is that you need for getting the best ending though). Sometimes the game throws so many enemies at you that it's best to just haul ass.

Watch out for the torture room that you can accidentally enter in level 4. It ended a good run for me.

"This is your first true "maze" in the game. I say "maze" because many exits are
actually hidden and require you to jump around like a madman, hitting every spot
you can see hoping one opens something. To make matters worse, many spots you
need to jump require up to three landings before they reveal their secrets.
Anyway, go right and take the door at the end of the hall. In this next hall
jump the fire pits and go to the right until you come to a landing between two
fire pits that is blocked on the right side by a vertical stack of blocks. Jump
on this floor to cause a door to appear below you. Drop down into a single-
screen room and take the exit in the floor here as well.

This will take you to a Torture Room (regardless of the amount of coins or
drinks you have)."
