Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  Here's a riddle for you all this week.  What's black and white and read all over?  A newspaper (that was an easy one).  And what did you do with a newspaper as a kid?  You got on your bicycle early in the morning and threw newspapers at houses and runaway tires and guys breakdancing in the street and skateboarders and the Grim Reaper and...what's that?  You never did any of those things?  Well, with this week's contest, you can finally do all that.  You guessed it, this week's game is Paperboy.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Life 0 (until you have no more red caps remaining)
  • You may not play any of the game on Life 0.  You must immediately stop and take your picture.  Anyone suspected of playing the game on Life 0 will have their score disqualified
  • If you beat the game, take your picture on the High Scores screen
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Arcade

The contest ends Sunday, 3/23/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

Updated score 108,100 ...ugh this one is just soo frustrating. I was down to only 4 subscribers on Sunday. Used alot of papers to bust windows. The parts that are brutal are when its the r/c car, runaway tire, and kid on big wheel all at the same time (really, its just the r/c car thats just a pain to get around or throw at when you are trying to hit the mailbox).

I have been so spoiled with the Genesis port of this game. Here's hoping I can readjust to the NES version's hit detection and color palette.

The hit detection is so bad in this game, especially with the fences. I can have that thing cleared easily and it thinks I smash right into it. I try to completely avoid fences if possible. I still can't even make it to Thursday. Could be a rough week for me.

x 100 on the hit detection. The worst I think is the skateboarder and the tricycle. If I am even remotely close to either.....crash.

I always just dropped all the papers on my route off at the nearest dumpster then learned to smoke cigarettes and drink cheap beer with the neighborhood bum. Just saying.

Haha, edited to fix my grammar. Yeesh.

Play through a few times and see the spots where you can find the bundles of papers. That's usually when I throw alot at the non subscribers houses to bust windows. Trying to avoid the obstacles are a pain since when you die it seems the paper bundle spawns happen alot less. I managed to not die until around thursday. Wednesday I had alot of bundles spawn for me.

So, I went to fire this up to play for the week, and I ran into a problem.  The game starts, but it does not acknowledge any controller commands.  The controller/console works with other games, and I don't have a second NES to finish the troubleshooting process and see if the game would work on another console.

I've read about this being a problem with clone systems (RetroDuo, etc), but I'm playing a game I had as a kid on a console that I got in late 1985.  This isn't a clone system.    Strange...

I haven't found any pattern to the bundles.  They seem random to me.

Why do some games you say points at game over but others at life 0. Why not just do game over for all of them?

Participation point here I go.
Sorry if I haven't participated in the last few weeks, but I had way too much stuff to get done and I wasn't in the right mood.
I already got a few "kickass" scores in my phone since this is one of those games I'm terrible at

If only you could do this in the actual game...

It seems to me there is somewhat of a pattern. From playing it the last few days, you'll often get a bundle of paper at the second house when you don't need it and then you won't get one until the next block.I've come across that several times. I think it's based on the pattern of the suscriber houses. Not sure if this is true, but it seems like the fewer subscribers you have, the more bundle drops there are.

And playing to life 0 is just a way to change things up and not play every game the exact same way. Sometimes we play a game using only one life.

Updated with a better score. Ive pretty much hit a stalemate in this game, I'll still try to get a better score a few times later in the week but between work and Square my time will be mostly filled. Never really was that good at, or liked, NES Paperboy anyway and this is leaps and bounds better performance than when I was a kid so I'm more than happy with this score.

This, and also not dying. I've found that if you progress to the 2nd part of the level (day), I alot more paper drops. One The key is to keep at least above 3 subscribers. But, I could be wrong or maybe just luck.
