I just recently dumped the Block Out prototype for NES that SystemFreak got at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. This is the same one that popped up randomly on Reddit, as some of you may recall.

I'm working on something a little more substantial, but for now, here's a little teaser video I cut together:

Yeah, the original game is pretty good, but the NES isn't really the best way to play it. The computer version rotated the pieces using six buttons and gave you full control. The Genesis and arcade halved it to three, which was fine since there are only three ways to rotate an object, but it still cut down the speediness of the original. The NES is as far as I know the only version to gimp it down to two buttons...you can still rotate the pieces any way you need to but it can take three button presses on the NES to do something you can do with one press on the computer. It makes the higher speeds basically impossible.

Awesome! Looks surprisingly good, although I can see how the controls could be an issue.

No emulators support it yet (that I've found), it does crazy IRQ tricks to fake a very convincing 3D effect.

Oh? What board does it use?

One of those proprietary Tengen ones, mapper 64.

There's a pirate rom in the goodset named 3D Block that looks like it could have been ripped from this game, but it's much sparser outside of the field of play. It's add odd combo of mapper 0 and chr-ram. Have you seen that one? thoughts?

I think you are speaking of the unlicensed 3D Block game, published by RCM group (1990) (if I can remember the letters correctly), developed by a guy named Xinwei, who at the time lived very close to where I live.

Most of Xinwei's games were unauthorized ports / heavily influenced by arcade games, if I can recollect properly.  His 3D Block game also had nudity in it!

Somebody should hack a version that uses dual-controllers a-la-Smash-TV... then you have d-pad in left hand for translation, and d-pad in right hand for rotation.
