Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  The first two weeks of 2014 have been exciting ones in the contests with lots of participation and some great scores and this week should continue that trend.  This week's game is going to be a Konami classic and that game is Life Force.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Life 0
  • Once you get to Life 0, you must stop playing and take your picture.  You may not play any of the game on Life 0.
  • One playthrough of the game only.  If you beat the game, take your picture once the game starts over.
  • Make sure to snap a picture of your score before heading into a boss battle.  You cannot see your score while fighting a boss.  If you think you may use up all your lives at a boss, preserve your score before going into a boss battle.
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Shoot ‘Em Up

The contest ends Sunday, 2/23/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

Anybody have an extra copy of this they want to sell? I hate to emulate and haven't had much luck finding this for a reasonable price.

Updated! New Score of 316820

I know I missed two of the bonus points in stage 3. The moai and spread gun turret's got their revenge again.

once again photo with Game/Top Loader/Name and Controller followed by a more clear shot of my score.

protip avoid blue powerup pods unless you really really need everything dead right then and there. anything killed by that powerup wont yeild any score.

A lot of bad memories because of this game.
Time to turn them into a better 1 with a high score.

How long does a run usually take you? I've no deathed it in the past before, but can't recall how long it took.

You know I've never really paid attention. If I had to guess I'd say 30-35 minutes. Next time I play I'll note it unless tyrantrum or someone else who beats it wants to post how long it took them. And as far as what weapon to use,you want the laser. Ripple sucks. To help you out at the start, kill every orange thing at the beginning. Every row of them you kill give you a power up pod. To get you a nice setup at the beginning you want to grab the first pod and get extra speed then collect pods until you get enough to get the laser, then collect enough to get the 1st option, and get the last 2 pods for missiles. That combo will give you a nice balance of weapons to help get through the stage.

On a good run I usually beat it in about 26 to 28 minutes. My starting strategy for the first 12 powerup pods is Speed Up, Laser, Option and Speed Up x2. After that for the rest of the first stage I grab Missile, Option and max out my Speed Ups.

If you have a need to build up extra lives there are 2 extra life pods in the level, in the first vein like barrier about 3/4ths of the way up is a hidden one and the second hidden one is at the very bottom of the final barrier before the Brain Golem.

Yeah,I do that sometimes, but I like having the missiles to start off. And if I power up the speed too much I usually run into something at some point. I really only level it up once as that's the speed I'm used to. Was kind of hoping we could loop it until life 0,but it would probably end up being a grind for a lot of people so it's for the best.

Anyway, looking forward to the challenge as well tyrantrum. It'll be fun to see what ends up being the winning score.

I'm average/above average at most shooters but definitely not Life Force. This is one of the first ones I ever played and it is my absolute favorite one hands down.

I have no problem getting "fully" upgraded (2x option, 2x missiles, 2x laser, 1x speed) before the section of the first level where there are full-height regenerating walls... but those things are merciless.

The lasers wipe the path clean before the opposite end is visible... but the regeneration cycle swipes right up from behind and kills me every time.
It seems like with the normal gun, the gap you form in the wall is perfect and the regeneration is timed to follow along at the speed of screen scrolling.

How the heck do I get through there and not lose my upgrades? What am I missing?

PS - any tips on when the final upgrade is worth using?  It appears to be some kind of shield, but doesn't appear to be permanent.

dont start shooting them (or go into your gap you will use) until you are right on top of it

then, be as close to the right side of the screen as you can

if you do both of these, you wont die

Yep. As far as the force shield,I activate it as soon as it's available. It won't protect you from running into walls or getting hit by enemies or objects but it will protect you from a few bullets.

OK, so it's good for a certain number of bullets?

I couldn't really tell what it was doing.
