The year was 1987. I wanted a NES so badly. Super Mario Bros. was my favorite game, but I was stuck feeding quarters into the arcade game at a local convenience store. I come downstairs on Christmas day to find... Transformers toys.

My parents wised up and bought me the NES Action Set the following Christmas, so that was my first Nintendo year. I played and loved the NES until the release of the SNES. However, it wasn't until Link to Past that I decided to spend the money to get my own SNES. Like most people who owned the SNES during those years, I feel this is the overall best console ever made.
Forward to the N64. I buy the system on day zero along with Mario 64 and Pilotwings. What great games! Unfortunately, the system ultimately became a letdown. I got about halfway through Ocarnia of Time before deciding that it just wasn't the game, or the gaming system for me. It collected dust until getting sold on Ebay many years later.
I skipped the Gamecube generation in favor of the Xbox/PS2. However, I did get into the DS, and through the DS I started collecting GBA games as well. I have since sold off the DS and stick strictly to the GBA (via a Game Boy Micro).
Super Mario Galaxy brought me back into the Nintendo fold after trying it at a friend's house. I bought a Wii, which also pulled me back to the Gamecube stuff I missed. I have since sold off my Xbox & PS2 collection.
This past week I went full circle and bought a NES and 30 games from Ebay.
I guess you could consider me a "retro gamer", as the only modern system I own is the Wii. My gaming collection consists of Wii, Game Boy Advance, Gamecube, and PlayStation (one).
