Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  This week's game is going to be an NES classic:  Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.  For those who do not own Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, you may use good old Punch-Out with Mr. Dream.  Here are the rules:

  • Fight Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Don Flamenco (Major Circuit), King Hippo, Piston Honda (World Circuit), and Super Macho Man
  • Password for Don Flamenco and King Hippo: 005 737 5423 (fight King Hippo after defeating Don Flamenco)
  • Password for Piston Honda: 032 730 8442
  • Password for Super Macho Man: 267 853 7538
  • Get the fastest time you can against each boxer
  • The clock stop glitch is forbidden
  • Take your picture on the results screen after each match (make sure to have 6 pictures, one for each boxer)
  • If you opt to take your pictures on the KO screen (where Mario says TKO or KO), your milliseconds time will automatically be 99 for that boxer
  • If you cannot beat one of the boxers, your time for that boxer will be 9:00.  Do this for each boxer you cannot beat (excluding Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream)
  • Add up all of your times to get your overall time
  • Add three minutes to your time for each round you complete (ex. 1:34:00 of round 2 = 4:34:00 overall for that boxer)
  • You may use this time calculator to add up your times: http://www.unitarium.com/time-calculator
  • Fastest overall time wins
  • GENRE: Sports

BONUS POINTS

That's right, this week you guys can earn some bonus points on the leaderboard.  This is entirely optional and you do not have to submit the bonus score if you do not want to.  Here's what to do:

  • Fight Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream
  • Password for Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream: 007 373 5963
  • If you beat Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream this week, you will earn 1 bonus point on the weekly leaderboard and Sports genre leaderboard (be quick with your picture after he is defeated)
  • Whoever beats Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream the fastest this week will earn 3 bonus points on the weekly leaderboard and Sports genre leaderboard

The contest ends Sunday, 5/12/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will not be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

Looks like another participation point this week, I hope. I still have never beat Macho Man after all these years, so, we'll see.  Either way, I love this game so I'll be on this.

Already got a few of them finished. I can't touch the TAS times on Von Kaiser and King Hippo though. Von requires several perfect frames, and King Hippo requires extreme luck on the patterns. So for those two, I just did "decent" knock outs. On to Piston Honda!

I once got pretty good at this game. I'll see what I can do, but I could beat these in no time. Tyson on the other hand... IMPOSSIBRU!

Man I still need to work on fine-tuning some of these times.  Not a bad start.  Von Kaiser can be downed in around 44 seconds.  I think that's the lowest I've ever got.

Edit (5/12 8:42PM): New scores, some unsubmitted before, new screens to verify the one so I get that 99 milis off of there (Glass Joe).  Didn't have enough Tyson practice time this week.  Was happy with Macho, I had to practice him quite a bit to get back into it.  That one quick super punch always got me until I got used to the timing.

Glass Joe: Round 1 0:42:00
Von Kaiser: Round 1 0:54:99
Piston Honda (World Circuit): Round 1 1:00:99
Don Flamenco: Round 1 0:20:48
King Hippo: Round 1 1:04:99
Super Macho Man: Round 1 2:44:25

Stan, you need to take the pic at the results screen so they can see the milliseconds. They will be able to tell which fighter you just KOed by the circuit and your promoted ranking.

Two questions:

1. What if you can't beat a certain opponent? Is your overall score still valid and if so how much time would you have to add?

2. Are we required to beat all the opponents in one run or can we just post all our best times?

1. In case you can't beat some opponents, you will need to add 9:00 (minutes) per opponent not beaten to your final score.

2. You only need to provide your best time for each opponent, hence why Bimmy gave the password to them. The only exception is Von Kaiser, for which you'll need to beat Glass Joe first, but hey, that guy is pretty much a punching bag

My preliminary total with all 6 boxers KO'ed is 5:57.06

Super Macho Man is where I'm really weak. I can get him down in the first round, but nothing compared to the TAS 45-second finish. There are too many perfect frames to deal with trying to get him down that fast.

You totally read my mind, dude

If you can't beat someone, add 9:00 minutes to your score per opponent you lose to.  The only exception is Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream.  You actually have to beat him in order to claim the bonus points.  You can just post your best times for each boxer.

@Stan: Make sure on your next runs to post the results screen because you need to tally your score to the millisecond.

Keep in mind that some of those TAS times use the clock stop glitch to achieve such low times.
Last time we did this one, the clock stop glitch wasn't allowed.

That would explain a few things for sure. I'd say they shouldn't be allowed here either.

Edit: Looking up a page on the TAS records, I read that several of the misdirection strategies (especially on Super Macho Man) are impossible to do for a human. That makes me feel better.

Aye. Lowest I have seen done on Super Bonus Stage Man by a human without the clock stop glitch was about 1:07.
My lowest was 1:18, but that was two or so years ago, before chemo. My fingers are now slower and I am a bit rusty.

Hopefully I will put on a good fight.

Just fair warning for anyone going for the Mike Tyson bonus, it doesn't show the time in milliseconds after you beat him so have your cameras ready when he's down for the count!
