Beat Breath of the Wild not too long ago and now it's time to play some games I've always wanted to play on N64. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. The only problem is right after I got the games my N64 decided to stop working. Now that I dropped a little under a 100 bucks on two great games that I'm sure are worth it, I can't afford another N64 at the moment. Luckily a friend has lent me Ocarina and Majora's Mask for 3DS. I have two questions...

Are they worthy remakes or are they butchered versions of classic games?

If I beat them can I say I've beaten Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask? I liked the Mario 64 remake on DS but it was different enough to where if I beat that version of the game, I wouldn't say that I beat Mario 64. Does this make sense? haha

Best way to play them imo, and yes they are faithful ports

Very solid games. Infinitely better than the crappy emulation version on the Zelda collectors edition on the GameCube.

The only thing I'd say is that the water temple on the 3DS version of OOT is a lot easier than the N64's version. They added lights in the 3DS water temple to tell you the water level for settings, which makes the temple a lot easier. So if you want the true struggle that is the OOT water temple, you need to play the N64 or gamecube version. Otherwise, it's the exact same game but with better graphics and better controls on the 3DS, and I would say beating the 3DS versions still "count" as beating the N64 versions.

They are both really good ports with minor changes, I actually prefer them to going back and playing the originals.

I dont see why beating the 3DS versions wouldn't count as beating the game, might not count in the beating every N64 game thread though.

3DS introduced multiple quality-of-life improvements which make both games easier, quicker, and smoother. Certain nitpicky little details changed that a seasoned veteran who's played the games many times will notice and perhaps balk at, but having not played them you'll be more than fine - as Brock said the 3DS versions are the best way to play them. I still play both on N64 but that's purely personal preference.

The temple boss fights and Zora swimming are different in Majoras Mask 3D. I think the Gyorg fight needed the improvement but other than that it was unnecessary to change the other boss fights. The Zora swimming mechanic is also less fun and more annoying (uses magic in 3D version). Other than that I think it is a good port with most changes improving the quality of the experience

The Ocarins of Time remake is great.
Majora's Mask remake is kinda bad.

I recommend watching YouTube user Nerrel and his videos on the remakes. Especially Majora's Mask 3D.

I write shorthand reviews of every classic game I beat on The Backloggery, have a look-see.

I only played OoT remake but it was probably one of the best remakes I have ever played along side RE1 remake on GC, 100% faithful from what I remember and the best way to play it.

Speaking of being able to beat the games... I feel like if you can get the bomb into the giant statue in Goron City you deserve a damn medal. I assumed you were supposed to since bombs are the theme of Goron City but I actually youtubed it (something I never usually do) to see if I was wasting my time or not haha like if it was even possible.

OOT is close enough to the original that you could easily say you got the N64 version experience if you beat the 3DS one. But the bosses are different enough in MM for me to count it as it's own entity. QoL changes in both of the games for the most part make them much easier and more accessible, especially the save mechanics in MM.

OOT 3D is a 10/10 port. MM 3D is a 7.5/10 port just because I'm not a fan of the boss fight changes. With that said, if this is your only way of playing it right now it definitely isn't bad and still worth playing. But if you do have a choice, I would suggest going with the N64 version personally, and then maybe do the 3DS version later to see the different boss fights.

The Ports are solid...but to note MM has added features that make the game easier if you're a "purist". The saving functionality is vastly easier in the handheld with more owl statues, and the dreaded time management is more easily controlled with the songs. The game still sucked major Mario balls though...just saying! It's the red-headed Mario Sunshine of the Zelda series  .

I loved the n64 versions, and the remake of OoT was awesome, MM on the other hand was nice (graphic wise) but was a bit of a disappointment all in all.
