Sorry if this topic been covered before, but I've been pondering getting one of these along with the AVS ever since the AVS came out:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GHEJ...

Would it possibly make zapper games work on the AVS with a regular old SD CRT TV? Or is there some kind of lag that will prevent it?

EDIT: Crap, that one only supports 1080p output. What about 720p ones then?

It's more about the timing than the signal, I think, and converting your image to composite from HDMI is going to introduce more lag.

I wish it would work, that would be awesome, but I'd say definitely not.

It can't work. HDMI outputs a whole frame at once instead of drawing it line-by-line. It's too late to restore Zapper support once the source signal has become HDMI. Sorry.

Yeah, there'll be lag.

As Czroe says, you need the cathode ray tube drawing line by line to get the Zapper to work, and no lag (the AVS has no output lag, but anything in the signal chain like that converter would introduce it.) And the only 720p CRT TVs wouldn't do the interlacing that the Zapper needs.

Someone did introduce a Frankenstein'd setup using a Rasberry Pi, a Wiimote and sensor bar, and an LED and an Adafruit Trinket Pro. https://github.com/charcole/LCDZa...

However, he was using a regular NES with composite output split between the TV and the setup. I don't know if there's a similar one for HDMI.

Darn, I came here with this exact question after buying this...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...

...and hooking it up to my old CRT.

Can confirm. No bueno. It doesn't display the hitboxes properly.

Correction: at all.

I've posted this question when the Retron 5 came out, and I was told there'd be some sort of lag when converting the signal.

You're the only person I've heard that's tried this. Guess that confirms everything.

I've tested Hi-Def NES and, even though the analog output only shows white silhouettes of the sprites on a black screen while outputting HDMI, the Zapper still works for some games. Full-screen flashes don't work because only sprites/objects show on the analog screen with HDMI in use, but the hit boxes do show.

This means you can't start Duck Hunt with the Zapper (full-screen flash), but you can start with the controller and shoot the ducks/targets with the Zapper. Most people use the controller to select Duck Hunt from the SMB/DH menu anyway and never realized you could navigate the menu with the Zapper, so Duck Hunt is perfectly playable with this hack and a Hi-Def NES, which is pretty cool.

Thanks for all the info. Yeah I guess I'm just going to have a clone console on the side for zapper games then. I don't really care about the audio and video quality of zapper games tbh, as long as they work.

I actually just recently acquired a hand me down CRT HDTV from a friend, and I thought wow this will be the best of both worlds. I'll have a CRT for zapper games, 240p support through component video, no input lag, and HD through HDMI and the component inputs. But as it turned out, the CRT HDTV works just like an LCD HDTV. There's input lag, 240p through composite and S-Video upscales to 480i, and zapper games don't work! 240p is not supported through the component inputs either, also any resolution lower than 480p is not even supported on the HDMI jacks! Oh well, still a damn good looking TV and will probably make the AVS look fantastic with much deeper black levels.

Btw I guess I should mention that the CRT HDTV I got supports 720p and 1080i through component and HDMI, but doesn't support 1080p at all. I think pretty much all CRT HDTVs didn't support 1080p.

EDIT: MY CRT HDTV does indeed support 240p over component! YES. I can finally get SCART to YUV!! This is a revelation I just had to share, oh man I can't wait to RGB mod my N64 now....
