The skateboarding stops adding new segments once you get to round 6. At that point, it just loops stage 5 over and over again, but you start with one less life point every five loops or so. Once you get to round 3 of surfing, the game introduces jumping fish in addition to the seagulls and innertube-riders. I think I've only managed to get to like round 5 or 6 on surfing and that was by fighting the controls and doing the absolute minimum to get the pier to appear

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

I played this for about 15 minutes so far. Trying to muster up the energy to turn it on again, lol. I told my brother what this week's contest was, and he was like, "Oh, good god..."

I'm probably looking at a participation point here.

Well I haven't bothered even playing this one yet. I thought this game was terrible when I was a kid, and even though I think I will appreciate it more now I have yet to muster up the energy to start.

I'm really impressed with the monster scores posted so far.

I tinkered with it on an emulator (with a keyboard) yesterday, and then played some on the console at home and my score practically doubled just from the ergonomic difference.

I WILL point out, from my observations so far, the skateboarding seems to be slower on the emulator for some reason.
Maybe it's a nuance of not being able to inject as much speed as with a controller on the console, but I thought I should point it out.

Also, the RNG that determines the coin layout appears to be fixed on the emulator, so you always get the same coin layout.
(so I was surprised when I saw at least 3 distinct coin layouts for the first level on the physical console -- using the same ROM on a powerpak, so it isn't a ROM issue)

In terms of strategy, it seems like:

(1) skateboarding --- you wipe out more than once, you lose, based on the timer alone after Round 5 (3rd skateboard stage)
--- also, if your recognize the coin layout, you can strategize which color to pick (and get multipliers) rather than just grabbing every coin
^^^ (that is the one advantage of the clown, is that his high-point coins are much higher contrast)

(2) surfing -- on the first level or two you can actually jump the top of the curl and make it to the end on one life if the birds don't kill you, after that I find the wave to be too fast

Yeah, for the surfing, some might say you are constantly fighting the controls but once you learn how it works, its not as bad. The seagull actually moves kind of in unison with you so to not have it attack you, I tend to move further from the curl and then back again, you can usually time it right so the seagull doesn't hit you. Same applies to the inner tuber.
I know its not the best explanation but just try and mess with the controls. Also, when you reach the pier, go back to the wave to try and rack up pts inside the frame of the wave by doing the 360 quick slash move. You can usually extend the pts that way.
Hope this helps. I'm not quite a master at this but I get the controls.

Updated my score. Finally got around to rack some decent time on the surfing part by just slashing the top of the curl. Also, use the jump when you see the gull fly by. Then, I looked down at my score and just crapped the bed on the next surfing part. I'm probably done at this point 'cause that was just taxing on me. Not thumb wise, just tedious.

WOW!

And interesting!  I never expected anyone to max out the score but definitely not like you did.  I wonder if this is going to impact the rules for this one now that you've done it.

Plus I still don't get the surfing so kudos for figuring it out!

Agreed. That's insane.

I'll only be posting a token score this week for participation.
Will also try to post a Naughty List again, but this week has been ape shit bananas.

I guess here's the trick:

Constant 360's on the D-pad. Doesn't look like fun. I have a feeling this might affect the rules.

Yeah, that's how I wound up maxing out.  Initially I was doing that and then jumping the seagulls, but I soon realized it's easier to just stop doing 360's and just glide under them.  They can touch almost your entire torso w/o knocking you off.  Hitbox is real wonky.

What do you guys think about this? This a very big exploit of the point system, but since I haven't played the game (and it wasn't even announce in the list of games to come) I can't really judge right off the bat how the issue could be solved.

Does making it a further progression sounds possible?

Man, though, that is a feat. I commend you for your efforts! My thumb can't handle that kind of movement anymore...

Seems like this should be OK. Go by rounds, furthest progression. I'm obviously not an expert on the game, either, though, since I can't even get myself to turn the system on again Could some of the more seasoned T&C players confirm?

360 'ing over and over again on the D-pad is definitely possible. Going by rounds is definitely the way to go, with score determining who wins in case of a tie. And add a no point-racking rule.

I would agree with this. Furthest progression. No surfing point racking.

i'd say just do skateboard only, but progression on the later surfing levels is definitely a weed-out in my opinion.
Uninterrupted skateboarding makes it too easy to stay in the groove.

PS -- tournament trophy arrived yesterday and it looks AMAZING.  It is definitely going to be my new name-tag for future contest photos.
