FDS Roger Rabbit to NES Completed! Details inside!

Did you know that the Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle game for the NES was a resprite of the original Roger Rabbit for the Japanese Famicom Disk System?

Looking into the Bugs Bunny NES rom, the tiles that say "Please Set Side B" are still present.

This is my attempt to recreate the Famicom Disk System game and port Roger back into the NES. The reason why I started this project is to actually have the Roger Rabbit that "could have been" work on real NES hardware rather than the FDS system. And here it is!!!

So what america's saying is instead of calling the movie "who framed roger rabbit?" They should have called it "WHO GIVES A FLYING F#C% ABOUT ROGER RABBIT?"

I'd really love to see doki doki panic sprites with the extended music, added animations, and slower waterfalls of mario usa.  But that would be one major sprite swap.

Actually!

SMB2 does have the extended animations! They just decided to use only a certain number of them. The graphics are still present, as is the code.

It was mostly a license thing, I don't think they wanted to do it to spit in Roger Rabbit's face. lol Of course, we still got a RR realese, even though it was a totally different game.

About Mario: A hack's already been done to replace the character sprites from SMB2 to DDP ones. I actually thought about redoing SMB2 to include LESS animations to make it more like DDP than just a resprited SMB2...

Yes but unlike the other people I don't actually expect this to happen because I realize it's a major amount of work.  It's not like I started a whole thread for it.

Yes and no, mostly just cosmetics. The NES game was much easier compared to the FDS one since the enemies where a bit slower on the NES. Also, both the title screen and the ending screen are just a little different from one another.

I found something pretty weird when I was redrawing the victory pose. My first attempt I realised I couldn't find Roger's head anywhere in the FDS rom where it should have been in the NES one. That's because the FDS shares the 2 tiles for his head with another sprite while the NES one didn't-- it just used it's own tiles instead of sharing. Simple fix, I just redrew the same exact sprite that was shared in the FDS game onto Bug's head in the NES game and everything is all hunky-dory.

The hack was done by "MB Hacks" and the only thing that was done was the sprites.

My idea of the hack would be to make it as close to the original as possible, the spriting of that might be something I can do, as far as programing (Like removing the run button) that might take some looking into.

But enough with SMB2/DDP... back to the Rabbit!! :B

No way man I like the stuff they added in mario usa like the run button and extra frames of animation and extra music. I just want the original sprites restored.

Bad news and good news!

Bad news first.

Ran into a bit of a problem... Remember a couple of posts up where I said that the FDS game likes to share tiles? Well since it did share some head tiles/sprites, there was room for Roger's tail and foot on his death animation:



The NES version didn't need extra tiles for Bugs-- They did all they can to cram everything in a 97kb file... so everything's not all 1:1. So as of now, his death animation is as complete as it can be. Maybe someone could try and recreate the missing tile for Roger's butt from an existing "blank" tile? As of now, it's nothing real big, animation still looks great-- and now everything's (nearly) complete. Which brings me to some good news:

Roger's animations are all complete (cept that damn tile):

I don't know why but I find this to be pretty cool. Now restore all the doki doki panic sprites and the dark world music in mario usa and I will love youuuu

....now that I think of it without being able to implement the sfx from doki doki (which is impossible becuase of the fds extra sound hardware) it just wouldn't feel like doki doki....

Question....is it possible to rom have a fds file to add music and change tiles and POSSIBLY add frames of animations and do things like....say.....slowdown waterfalls?

It's possible to we-write the game so there's less frames for waterfalls, music changes (Probably have to re-write the whole scale-- even then, it won't be the same cuz FDS has different sound than NES)

As far as restoring the frames to some sprites back to the original game's-- is to draw over all three (or however many animations there are for them) of the sprite's animations with just one still sprite. Then it will cycle through nothing but a single frame.

A lot of stuff is a whole lot easier said than done, The tiles/sprites might be rearranged in a different order, or it would share sprites in one, but not the other (Problem I'm having in Roger Rabbit right now)-- but in theroy, it's not impossible. It'll just take a lot of time, sacrifice, and head scratching.

Speaking of scarifies, more bumps along the road, this time it's with the enemy sprites. Smartass/Greasy (the weasels) 's sprite uses 3 forms of animations on the FDS rom for his head, while Sylvester sprite only uses 1 head tile and the rest are for his upstairs/downstairs animation.

I'm gonna have to work out a compromise to where Smartass/Greasy's animations are limited now, and won't flow the same like in the FDS game... hopefully, I'll turn out something workable so it's nothing bad.

Geez, you'd think they'd keep the graphical behavior the same to make it easy on me, but I will accept the challenge and keep trucking along on this!

Okay, let me get your guys opinion on this, since the weasels use 3 frames of animation to their heads, and I can only use one since Sylvester only has one frame, which do you guys prefer? A, B, or C?



I could edit the first post or start a new thread with a new poll, but I rather keep everything in here if possible. Whatever you guys think will be the outcome to the game. If the vote comes out a draw, I'll just choose one at random. No due date on this, just post whenever before I decide to put it in (I'll let you all know when I do).

Also, this will give me time to work on the manual a bit, I'm taking the Bugs Bunny one and re-editing it with all the correct info and in color! More on this as it develops:

^ lol, Well, the frames for his arms will be the same, it's just that I have to stick with one frame for his head instead of 3 like in the FDS version.
