Since it has a more traditional level layout, I'll probably be doing progression and low score for Super R-Type

I prob won't be playing it then. Not a fan of low score contests, that goes against everything the genre stands for. I get it when the game has broken scoring like UN Squadron, but Super R-Type doesn't have any infinite point farming exploits.

Well I could understand that from a purist's perspective. In regards to the contest, it's paired up with Tetris Attack and I'm trying to avoid doing two high score contests at once to keep things fresh

58 is quite a rout. Not sure I have it in me, but I do own a copy of TSB (SNES) so I owe at least an attempt. Gives me something to do tonight!

If anyone needs a copy of Tecmo Super Bowl, I just purchased a large lot of SNES games locally and had a couple of nice copies in it. Hit me up in pm and we can work out a deal. Thinking something like $8 shipped within the US.

I, for one, like furthest progression/low score contests. Heck, I do them in the NES contests. I think it's a fun way to find and try different strategies to beating games and presents a whole series of different challenges.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

I like them too, because they offer a challenging new way to play, if you're someone like me who hasn't done very many of them. Especially in a game like UN Squadron, where you need to get points/money to buy better planes and weapons, it's makes an interesting balancing act; you can't just dodge everything, you need to shoot down enough enemies to upgrade your main cannon and get money.

So last night's first attempt at Tecmo Super Bowl didn't go terribly well... and as such, I didn't even bother to take a picture.
Instead, I'll practice up a bit and try again.

Low score contests only exist because you guys continue to play games that don't have proper scoring systems. I've never even heard people playing for "low score" outside of NA.

Its just a for fun contest pegboy. You seem like your getting a little too worked up over something that is for fun and just to play games. I kinda like it, so you wont have anyone point farming a game. Just straight beating it. Its just a twist and different type of strategy for those good enough to beat the game. If people cant beat it thats what progression/low score is for. People want to play different fun games and change it up every year. Not the same games every year that you may think have a proper scoring system.

updated my scores. posted my first un squadron where I tried. I suck. Finally getting around to posting the 55 margin tecmo score

Updated score on UN Squadron: 1031600

I went after almost every quartermaster convoy I could, farming them until they didn't show up anymore and I had to press forward in the missions(although I skipped some at the beginning of the game). Just a heads up; on every run when I've made it to the last mission, the convoys no longer appear on the map. So, racking up convoys is certainly not a foolproof/infinite method of getting points.

Had an opportunity to jump up a couple spots on the Tecmo leader board and my defense totally blew it in the 4th. Could not stop the 1st downs and did not get the ball back with only 18 seconds on the clock. Ended up winning 48-0, but should have been at least a touchdown or two more as they had the ball for at least 3 minutes strait in the 4th.

This game is tougher than I remember.  With enough practice, I could probably do a little bit better.

Tecmo Super Bowl:  17

I had never played this game before tonight and I had no idea what I was doing at first.  I must have hit reset at least 5 or 6 times before I finally started to get the hang of it.  In my first game, I managed a score of 14 and decided to play another one right after that since I was starting to get used to how the game worked.  I was doing really good through the first half and had a 34-3 lead and looked like I was going to smoke Tampa Bay.  Then the second half began and things just didn't go my way.  I threw nothing but incomplete passes and had a tough time getting them to turn over the ball.  It seemed like any time I tried knocking a player down, they would knock me down first.  During one such instance, I could do nothing but sit there and watch Tampa Bay run like 40 yards for a touchdown while my stupid guy just laid on the field.  In the end, I allowed 14 points in the second half, scored nothing at all for two straight quarters, watched Steve Young's passing percentage drop from 85% to 58%, and had Jerry Rice miss pass after pass.  I had Madden 96 when I was younger and I prefer that over any other football game on the SNES.  I suppose maybe I could grow to like Tecmo Super Bowl if I played it a bit more...just maybe

Tried playing some Tecmo this morning, and I just can't hack it. I'm beyond pathetic at sports games. I have no idea what teams are good and who aren't, and it feels like the AI QB sacks me every play. I get more fumbles and interceptions than first downs.

Decided to play a second game. Upped my score, but disappointed I allowed a field goal, and then fumbled a punt return for a TD. Suppose I'll play UN Squadron for the first time.

Try playing as the Bills, Giants or Niners, against Tampa Bay

I'll give it another try. I first tried playing as the Bengals against the Seahawks, and promptly got my ass whooped. Then I tried Bills vs. Colts(since that's where the selector starts by default), not much better.

Hey, folks! Sorry to have been MIA from the monthly contests for so long. Missed some pretty great games. But, hopefully I'll be able to get back into the swing of things.

Let's start with UN Squadron, a game I've consistently enjoyed since it's release, despite not being terribly good at it. The "cave" stage has consistently vanquished me and this time was no exception, although I think I put up a pretty good score (personal best?) considering.

Nope, partake in whatever games you want. If anything this contest is still wide open compared to the other one

Here's my first real attempt at Tecmo Super Bowl in about 20 years. Tampa squeaked in a touchdown and field goal in the last 30 seconds. John Taylor was my ace-in-the-hole as the defense almost never covered him.
