Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests!  It's that time again: it's time for a sports game.  I can hear you all groaning, but hopefully you will enjoy this one.  This week's game is going to be Arch Rivals.  It's more than just basketball, it's a basketbrawl!  (Yeah, bad joke)  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Pick whichever team name and color you want for your team and the computer
  • Pick whichever player you want
  • You must play a whole game
  • Greatest differential between your score and the computer wins.  A positive score takes preference over a negative score.
  • Ex: You 55 CPU 35 = score of 20
  • Ex. You 35 CPU 55 = score of -20
  • GENRE: Sports

The contest ends Sunday, 11/10/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

Sorry for groaning so loud, bimmy. I'll keep it quieter next time

For realz though, I don't think I've played any of the basketball games on the NES including this one, so maybe (hopefully) I'm wrong and it will be fun.

I remember playing this in the arcades is a kid, but I've never played the NES version. It seems like Midway used Arch Rivals as the basis for NBA Jam.

Just so I'm understanding the rules correctly, a -25 score beats a +20? I'm pretty sure that's how the rules read but I may be wrong.

Nope, -25 is lower than 20.  45 points lower actually.

I can see how the exact wording in the rules would cause confusion though.

i think there is a typo in the second example , if you lose the game your score would be negative correct?

I understand basic math its the wording of the rules i dont understand. What's confusing me is the fact that the rules say greatest score differential between player and comp. A 25 point loss for the player is a greater differential that a 20 point win. I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just looking for a little clarity. Veterans of these contests may understand the intent behind the rules but it may be a little confusing for us rookies.

Makes sense.  I was assuming that the greatest positive differential crowns the winner.  The other way around would make for an interesting low score contest.

My apologies.  I meant no disrespect.

Was just trying to help clarify the rules.  For other sports games that have been played in the past, we have used similar rules.  You always want to beat the computer.  People have occasionally lost to the computer and their scores have always been ranked below the people who won their games.

Perhaps it may be less confusing if the rules mentioned something to this effect?

Yes that's exactly the clarification I was looking for. Like smick said above, the way it's worded now made me think it might have turned into some kind of low score contest, and being as I'm new, I wasn't sure if that's something that would happen in these contests or not. No disrespect taken though. I'm actually a huge fan of your blog but you do need to update a little more often .

As far as team sports games on the nes go,I'm pretty sure it's always a "biggest blow out" competition. And not sure why all the hate for nes sports games. Most that I've played are super fun!

Cool.

And thanks about the blog.  I really do need to get back into posting on there more often.  3 posts so far this year just doesn't cut it!  I haven't had as much time for much gaming this year beyond the weekly contests, but I'm hoping to change that soon.  At the very least, I have some new videos that I've been meaning to post.

I updated the rules to clarify things a little more. So basically, a positive score takes precedence over a negative score.

bimmy, in the second example in the rules - wouldn't the differential between "Player: 35" and "Computer: 35" be "0"? Right now it says it's -20...so I guess I'm confused too.

I think I understand the intent of the rules, it's like when we played Ice Hockey and you're trying to get a crazy landslide victory. Which I am not good at, lol

lol, I just noticed my typo. It should have read "Player: 35 and Computer : 55." It's all fixed now and hopefully everything makes more sense now. And Krunch is correct, it's like when we played Ice Hockey and the goal was to win by as big of a margin as possible.

another update: +112. had sometime this morning to play.  The key is timing the inbound and predicting where the computer will go. Also, solid def (punching) if they end up in the offensive side (and defensive side too) of the court is critical so your teammate can rebound and if possible, pass up or dribble down for a three pointer.

The best part about this game is that when you get frustrated at not being able to increase your score, you can just stand there and beat on the computer players. Very therapeutic.

This is very true.  It did make me feel a little better.

Also, does anyone else suddenly feel the urge to run out and buy a pair of BK high tops?  I was always an L.A. Gear man myself but maybe it's time to switch.
