Could you give the cliff's notes on what you mean by "headered ROM"?
Is there some manual change to the ROM that is required before patching?
In SNES world, a headered ROM has an extra 512 bytes at the beginning of the ROM. These are from old copiers that needed headers in order to work properly. SMC, FIG, UFO and SWC are all common file extensions for headered copier ROMs.
Typically, an SNES ROM without a header has a .SFC extension. Those are considered clean ROMs.
Just make sure that your Super Mario World ROM is 524800 bytes long when patching SML3. I felt going with a headered ROM was better because those are the most common still.
